Help connect Newhaven
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Newhaven’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
Care is needed navigating through Denton and along the previously mentioned bridlepath - I managed to follow it but there is no evidence on the ground that it exists, bar a sign where the route diverges from the SDW. A bit muddy in January but nothing impassable!...

Between Bishopstone and Seaford the route is mostly on the tarmac-ed promenade. There is a cafe van at Bishopstone, even in the winter and there is a water refill point on the promenade at the Seaford end....
MJRW12345
The second half of the walk takes off from the car park along a bridle path heading directly towards Newhaven. On the map this is shown as a bridle path for about 500m directly across a field, and this has been used by the Slow Way plotter. From here the straight line path is still directly across a field but much more evident on the ground (foot and hoof prints have worn a path) though there isn't much in the way of signage....

The walk along that and then into Alfriston is gentle and has a nice bit of variety - be sure to check out the long barrow....

Walked this on 20th August 2023 really nice route up through the castle hill nature reserve. Loads of benches to enjoy a drink and the view...

Walking on the east bank of the river is quieter and makes it very easy getting into Newhaven and the station....

Once you venture away from newhaven there is initially a couple of hilly areas, once you get to the top though the ridge line is one of the best spots in Sussex. You join the south downs way and follow this down into alfriston where you can then lead onto several more possible walks....

Once you leavee the industrial part of newhaven, jumped over the train tracks and connected up to the river this is a really simple, peaceful walk up the river. Once you cross the bridge at southease you join the Egrets way which is slowly being fully paved for easy access....

MJRW12345 added Newalf two, a new walk from Newhaven to Alfriston
Walk this routeThis is a lovely walk, following the well signed England Coast Path pretty much all the way - so it's dead easy to follow. I'd suggest it should either be by the Roderick Avenue bus stop - there's a few shops, cafes etc here and some buses along the coast road are limited stop and Roderick Avenue is the only stop that these buses serve in Peacehaven....
MJRW12345
I walked this route from Lewes to Newhaven. It's a great route without any major issues or obstacles. The stretch along Newhaven Road is safe - there's a short stretch of pavement followed by enough of a verge that you're out of the way of speeding cars - but it's not the most comfortable!...

Really straightforward route from Lewes to Newhaven with 90+% on the path next to the river so very easy to follow, once you've found the footpath at either end!...

The only issues are in the section from Foxhole Farm to the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve. The final short section through the nature reserve was pleasant. However I think this section of the route needs to be redirected , avoiding Foxhole Farm (which I suspect suits them just fine), heading directly to the edge of Denton, then using pavements along the main road to Newhaven station....

Bostal Boy added Peanew two, a new walk from Peacehaven to Newhaven
Walk this routeFrom here follow the river bank all the way into Lewes, crossing from the East bank to the West bank at the Southease swingbridge. The East bank of the river is quieter and less well walked, so the path is through long grass....

It passes through the attractive villages of Southease, Rodmell and Iford. There is a drinking water tap by Southease church and a pub (the Abergavenny Arms) on the main road at Rodmell....

Peacehaven and Newhaven are blessed with wonderful clifftop views....

As the previous review mentions, this route is one of the easiest between Newhaven and Seaford. It utilises the Vanguard way so is a fairly well trodden path. Accessibility is limited due to the railway bridge and some smaller/little overgrown paths....

The first mile or so of the walk is along the busy A26 followed by a short walk through an industrial estate leading to a level crossing across the railway to get to the east bank of the River Ouse. Take care on the level crossing, then you are immediately on river bank and a glorious walk following the meander of the river Ouse though fields, flood plains and past any number of sea birds. The bridge and road to Southease is also the route of the South Downs Way. However, if you turn right the route follows the Ouse and you walk across a field and then through a park, coming out at Cliffe High Street....

The high cliff of Seaford Head looms in the distance, but that's for another Slow Way. The bridge over the railway has a lot of steps either side, and the path alongside Mill Creek is not very wide and a little overgrown at the end of the Summer....

The Highway is an unmade road that passes through a static caravan park and past scattered houses as the outskirts of Peacehaven and Newhaven merge into each other around the phone mast on Rushy Hill. From here the route descends into Newhaven, close by the old Norman church of St....
