02 Oct 2021The official route follows the South Coast Road out of Peacehaven as far as 'The Highway'. I couldn't bring myself to do it with the spectacular clifftop scenery beckoning just the other side of the houses. I walked along the Promenade then headed up Cliff Avenue and Wellington Road to get to the same place.
The Highway is an unmade road that passes through a static caravan park and past scattered houses as the outskirts of Peacehaven and Newhaven merge into each other around the phone mast on Rushy Hill. From here the route descends into Newhaven, close by the old Norman church of St. Michael, to then reach the harbour and the railway station.
The route is well-traced and easily followed as it is shared with National Cycle Route 2. It's not a particularly attractive walk. It would be much better to walk along the clifftop to Newhaven Fort then drop down to go along the quayside into Newhaven. That would be worth a PEANEW 2 I think.
