Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Bostal Boy
04 Jun 2022Walked from Alfriston to Newhaven on a dry, sunny day 02-06-2022. For most of the route I thought it was absolutely fantastic, meriting 5*. A steady climb up a bridle path from Alfriston to the top of the Downs is not too steep. The route then heads across to the Rathfinny wine estate then down through a glorious field of barley to Devilsrest Bottom and the tiny hamlet of Norton. All wonderful walking.
The only issues are in the section from Foxhole Farm to the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve. The footpath away from the farm is along a ridge between two crops. This appears to be completely unused. When I got to the end it was apparent why this is the case. The path comes out onto the busy A259. The entrance to the path is blocked by a gate and other barricades to deter fly tipping and crossing the road at this location is actually quite dangerous. Clearly nobody seems to risk it.
The final short section through the nature reserve was pleasant. However I think this section of the route needs to be redirected , avoiding Foxhole Farm (which I suspect suits them just fine), heading directly to the edge of Denton, then using pavements along the main road to Newhaven station. Safer but not so attractive.
There are no facilities between Alfriston and Newhaven, the occasional stile and gate plus some livestock.
