Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Aug 2023Walked this route on 20th May 2023 and it is still a lovely connection between Lewes and Newhaven. They are currently working on the cockshut stream/meadow so there is a detour just outside Lewes.
Apart from this the paths are good, signage is easy and the .gpx file takes you easily along. Walking on the east bank of the river is quieter and makes it very easy getting into Newhaven and the station.

09 Oct 2022I walked this route from Lewes to Newhaven. On the whole, I was very pleased with it. It's a great route without any major issues or obstacles. I didn't walk Lewnew one, which just follows the river the whole way, so I can't say for sure, but I personally would much prefer this route, Lewnew two. There's so much to love!
Heading out of Lewes, you go through the Priory ruins, which are really cool, and then comes a long stretch of field and footpath walking. All the paths are good for walking, navigable, and as drawn; all the gates are openable. I think I shared one field with cows, and several with sheep.
The stretch along Newhaven Road is safe - there's a short stretch of pavement followed by enough of a verge that you're out of the way of speeding cars - but it's not the most comfortable! Thankfully, it is very short.
It's a treat to meet up with the South Downs Way for a short bit, even if it is a very short bit! The stretch along the river is spectacular. It's extremely lovely (and of course flat, easy to follow, etc).
The biggest issue with this route isn't really remediable and therefore isn't really a fault of this route in particular - the approach into Newhaven is pretty unattractive. It's a big industrial road; there's a wide pavement with separation from the road, so it's perfectly good fine walking, it's just a shame the walk ended this non-scenic way!
All in all, I was really very pleased with this route. There isn't too much in the way of challenging gradient, but the views of the South Downs are fantastic. It's an interesting and enjoyable route I'd definitely recommend.

30 May 2022I tried out this route on 29th May 2022. It passes through the attractive villages of Southease, Rodmell and Iford. Rodmell is the location of a Monk's House, once home of Virginia Woolf, a popular NT property.
The route goes across several arable fields. The paths are straight and easily followed, but this is partly dependent on which crops are being grown at the time and how high they are. One of the fields I walked through was waist-high oilseed rape.
There is a short section along the road at Northease where there is a verge which is wide enough to walk along.
The route comes into Lewes past the ruins of Lewes Priory.
There is a drinking water tap by Southease church and a pub (the Abergavenny Arms) on the main road at Rodmell. No other facilities on route.
The route between Newhaven and Southease is as per LEWNEW One.
