Help connect Clowne

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Clowne’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

There is a shorter and quieter route heading north then west onto Regent Street to meet Boughton Lane opposite our exit footpath. The green lane is fine but in March 2024 the footpath alongside the stream, which was flowing well, was rather muddy making this potential commuter route from Clowne a bit off putting. The road crossing is safe before a bit of estate road which leads to a delightful green corridor with a good surfaced path through Slayley Green, perhaps the highlight of the walk. The roadside walk into Killamarsh was fine, downhill most of the way, bit of a drag in the opposite direction I guess and only the bramble infested path to look forward to....

We are on the pavement of the road as we climb out of Killamarsh along High Street, Upperthorpe Road and Hut Lane. There is 100m or so of footpath from the road before we reach agate leading to a thin but clear path alongside the fences and through woody scrubland. We turn left and climb to cross the Clowne Greenway to reach the road at Slayley Hill....

The plotting is ab it approximate ion this first section, but with the aid of the OS map the intention is obvious and quiet roads lead from the town centre across the inner bypass and through an industrial estate....

I agree that the best alternative for getting out of Clowne is the pavement alongside the main road, however it soon becomes a more minor road....

On the day I walked, the field had been recently harrowed and there was no obvious path, however from the top of the first slope we can see the gateway we are heading for. Through the gateway the route joins a stony lane for 0.3 miles, before turning up a green land between the houses and climbing two fields towards Oxcroft....

From the bus stop in Clowne, a zebra crossing takes us over Mill Green Way, and we follow the main roads round to Boughton Lane, where we turn right to find a little used footpath, which has a couple of stiles and also excellent views over the escarpment. It goes through a green strip between industrial sites to a pond, then left to the roundabout where we cross Oxcroft Way and turn right up Slayley View Road, then left along a surfaced path through parkland. Chesterfield Road forces us left, and the path takes us up to the road at a convenient pelican crossing....

On the plus side, the route makes good use of three excellent former railway paths, and visits a country park and Creswell Model Village. Eventually we reach a quiet road and enter the Poulter Country Park, following a surfaced track around the west side of the park to the north car park, where we use quiet roads to reach Whaley Common....

My immediate reaction to this route was to make it shorter but I'm pleased I stuck with the original because it's easy to follow, well plotted and good surfaces. The old rail route is popular with dog walkers being a firm wide track often between high rock cliffs. We are soon back on a different old rail route the extension of this northwards may offer a more direct route in the future. From the car park we climb a fairly steep slope to join yet another rail route high in the sky or so it appears....

From the town centre the route quickly takes to the Clowne Greenway, a cycle route with a firm surface following the course of an old railway. At Whaley we join the quiet country road towards the Poulter Country Park....

A good, direct route that makes for a very pleasant walk between Worksop and Clowne. The route is easy to follow and the terrain is simple but charming. I will be using this route in the future....

A county walk with stiles and cattle two busy roads to cross unaided and a level rail crossing. A pleasant field edge walk with cattle and a view across to Worksop Manor. It appears locals walk down the field edge to a track which was well walked....

Most road walking is on pavements just a short section without. The path leaves the track to New Farm but the cross field section was invisible. This route avoids some road walking, using the Linear Park which runs just to the south of the cycle route, both along disused railways....

Walking that more accurate plot I still struggled because the available paths west of Barlborough do not always follow what is shown on the map. I suggest you try Eckclo-2...

Ken

I looked at using Barlborough Country Park but the road here was less busy and the park paths indirect. The Fox and Magpie Heritage Walk indicates that the track off Ward Lane is available as a footpath so it's used here as an easier route than the footpath from Ruthyn Avenue. The footpath follows a track through the extensive sports fields before crossing by bridge over the Trans Pennine Trail cycle route....

A true country field walk with some road walking but these are either short and quiet or have pavements. A short section of quiet road without a pavement then across fields to the unmade Church Road before another path across a cropped field to another unmade track. There would appear to be many options to approach or exit Bolsover but this one, while along a roadside pavement, may well offer the best view of the castle....

Netherthorpe Grammar School can trace its origins back to 1572 when four local families, the Sitwell, De Rodes, Cavendish and Frechevilles decided to establish a school to serve the local people of Staveley. Another section of field edge path leads to the cycle track then it's plain sailing....
