Description
The reviewer of Staclo-1 indicated that a better route would be along the old railway, now a cycle, multi-user path, so here it is Slow Way Staclo-2. It's very slightly longer perhaps because it overshoots the meeting point in Clowne and has to double back. It's easy level walking with no cattle gates or stiles at the Clowne end. The link to Staveley via Woodthorpe is along a cropped field footpath but it's are well used so should be easy to locate

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

15 Jan 2024I walked this route from Staveley. The plotting is ab it approximate ion this first section, but with the aid of the OS map the intention is obvious and quiet roads lead from the town centre across the inner bypass and through an industrial estate. There are pedestrian crossings over the next main road and then through Netherthorpe to reach open country. Despite the recent wet weather the paths were good underfoot. The Albert was open and supplied an excellent welcome and a beverage. Watch out for the footpath entry leaving Woodthorpe - masquerading as a residential drive, but giving access to the filed paths leading to the rail trail. Good walking from here to Clowne. The local history display at the former mR station is worth lingering. I enjoyed this route.

17 Jul 2022The walk is of three parts, urban roads, easy field paths and wide and level cycle path. The only refreshment stop, if open, is The Albert at Woodthorpe. The cycle track is well provided with benches which usually have an open aspect.
I walked Staveley to Clowne. The west east route out of Stavely does need care to follow the plot as it dog legs out of the town. Passing what is now Netherthorpe School the building suggests some history which Google supplies. Netherthorpe Grammar School can trace its origins back to 1572 when four local families, the Sitwell, De Rodes, Cavendish and Frechevilles decided to establish a school to serve the local people of Staveley.
What appears to be an ancient bridge leads to the countryside and carries Bridle Lane which initially has old stone setts providing a hard surface. At Woodthorpe Grange a seat offers a rest. Here also a stone wall built of local stone that has been severely eroded over the years. The Albert Inn is the only refreshment stop on this short route.
Another section of field edge path leads to the cycle track then it's plain sailing. It may be tempting to leave at the bridge approaching Clowne but that involves a steep climb to the town. Better to stay on the trail passing through a deep cutting then at the old station site double back a short distance which is what the plot offers.
