Help connect Brighton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brighton’s Slow Ways.

Also new boardwalks along the beach at kemptown which makes for lovely flat easy walking/wheeling away from the traffic and closer to the waves....

Along Hove promenade is lovely with plenty of stops for coffee....

Big climb to get to the top of elm grove but the views are exceptional....
MPHoplling
Having grown up in the area was slightly puzzled by some of the choices of streets in the North Laine, but that's minor....
David Sanderson
The route was accurate apart from some confusion over the route into Queen’s Park and also we walked through the play park in Saltdean rather than looping up the hill....
Wobbly Wanderer
Shortly after the start there is a section up Albion Hill, one of the steepest roads in Brighton, which might come as a shock if you are not used to it....
Debora
This is (in my opinion) the obvious route to take between Brighton and Saltdean. All on tarmac, really easy to navigate, no issues....
MJRW12345
The only feedback is that the route wasn’t clear if it wanted us to walk above or below the cliff....
Kelly Smith
Beautiful sunny day with cool wind to enjoy a slow slow walk with a view....
Ami
The route was very scenic and took us through the sea front along beach and took us straight to portslade station. Notes for improvement is that the route cut across aldrington park which has a cricket match happening....
Kelly Smith
Nice route, walking uphill to the Racecourse through Hanover and east bouldering green area. Then mostly downhill with a scenic view to the sea!...
Stefania
Very simple route to follow, nice to walk along the race course path instead of next to the road for the top section. If you're starting near Happy Valley park in Woodingdean it's more interesting to walk up & over the fields instead of down Warren Road...Elm Grove is steep if coming from Brighton!...
DLeggatt
The undercliff walk is flat and offers beautiful views of the white chalk cliffs....
Saira
The route crosses the A23 at a crossing to enter Patcham, an area I'd not actually explored before, but it's a pleasant neighbourhood with places shop, stop and eat. Leaving Patcham, the route follows the A23 briefly before a diversion around Withdean as far as Preston Park Railway Station. The final section to the station is via the New England area of Brighton, a nicer way to enter than the Preston Circus end of London Road....
David Sanderson
The route follows the promenade until you hit Brighton Marina, there's a gentle incline up to the chalk cliffs offering lovely views of the South Downs National Park....
Saira
Some industrial vehicles to watch out for, but footway on the majority of the route...
Tom Candy
This is the undercliff option for walking between Brighton Marina and Saltdean rather than using BRISAL One which uses the clifftop footpath alongside the busy A259....

Bostal Boy added Brisal three, a new walk from Brighton to Saltdean
Walk this routeAt this point the route ramps up to the cliff top to pass above the Marina complex, then follows the top of the cliffs for about three miles past Rottingdean to Saltdean. The path as far as Rottingdean is alongside the busy South Coast Road passing Roedean School, the Blind Veterans rehabilitation centre and Rottingdean windmill....
Bostal Boy
Pyecombe sits at the conjunction of two main roads from London to Brighton. Note: be careful of traffic walking under the railway bridge at the bottom of Mill Hill, Patcham. From here on into Brighton, the route runs parallel to the London Road, crossing back and forth periodically as it aims to pick up quieter paths. At the end of the route, following Debora’s advice (previous reviewer), I picked up the Brighton Greenway to arrive at Brighton Station....
Bostal Boy
Once past the end of the harbour, the route changes to seaside promenade for about two or three miles to Brighton Pier. From just before the Pier the path heads up East Street then goes through the Pavilion Gardens, then along Gloucester Place to Trafalgar Street and up to the Railway Station. It is also flat all the way until the final climb up Trafalgar Street to the station....
Bostal Boy
Most of the walk approaching Brighton follows the race track where you can enjoy the beautiful panoramas of the coastline....
Hayley Dove
This is a pleasant walk into the city centre with fine views towards the sea and with a panorama of the whole city to the west....
Bostal Boy
The route is not the most direct route, initially heading down Trafalgar Street in completely the opposite direction....
Bostal Boy
Nice route out of the centre of Brighton past the Pavilion and on to the promenade....
BecciWest
From Hove you follow the prom and then into Brighton Centre via the pavilion area which is better than the busy shopping streets....
BecciWest
This route begins in central Brighton with a sweeping prommenade. As the route exits Brighton, it takes a route south of the canal which is an industrial area....
nicomancer
Walked as part of a longer walk to Lewes - so if you are doing the same then instead of going into Woodingdean itself, return to Warren Road before the end of the racecourse, and take the Drove Road where you will eventually join up with the Slow Way from Woodingdean to Lewes...
funky
There is a steep climb once out of the city, to the summit of the Downs near Mill Hill, and similarly a steep slope down, following the South Downs Way, to the village of Pyecombe at the end - I don't think there are any ways to get north out of Brighton without having to tackle the Downs!...
Debora
Better to walk along the under cliff was rather than on the cliffs....
