Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

We did this route on a wet day and it was very muddy and slippery especially on the chalk. You definitely need proper walking footwear. It’s not for anyone who has issues with mobility as it’s more ramble than walk when you leave Brighton/Saltdean.

Think it’s better for a dry and sunny day.

The route was accurate apart from some confusion over the route into Queen’s Park and also we walked through the play park in Saltdean rather than looping up the hill.

It’s a reasonably safe route. Have to be fit and able. Not suitable for buggies or small children.

There are two ways to go from Brighton to Saltdean - along the coast, or up and over - and this is very much the second! Shortly after the start there is a section up Albion Hill, one of the steepest roads in Brighton, which might come as a shock if you are not used to it. After this there is a more gradual ascent towards the Downs at the top of the city, followed by a good long section walking around the perimeter, with stunning views of the Downs and the sea all around, until the descent to Saltdean begins. Worth noting that once you get out of the city centre there aren't many opportunities for stops or rest breaks unless you want to detour to The Downs Hotel at Woodingdean. Hmm my reviews seem to feature pubs a lot ...
One of the public footpaths on the route out of Brighton - to get from Sutherland Road to Whitehawk Hill - was too overgrown with brambles and nettles to be passable. I took a short detour so lost a bit of off road time, but saved the skin on my arms!.

Nice route, walking uphill to the Racecourse through Hanover and east bouldering green area. Then mostly downhill with a scenic view to the sea!.
