I love Brighton but would have hated the A-road drudgery of BriWoo 1 and I've had this route in mind for several years. It didn't disappoint....

Loved it but I decided to create the route because it went through two nationally important nature reserves and although I've enjoyed many other Slow Ways with glorious long views from the South Downs I've also enjoyed exploring the interior and this was particularly worth the detour....

I tested the southern part of this route from Woodingdean to Falmer after walking PyeWoo 1 into Woodingdean along the B2123 /Falmer Road. I had to double back to check out this way south/down into Bevendean from Woodingdean after the other path (to the Rec) that I tested didn't work out and I confess I just had a look from the bottom rather than walk all the way up just to turn around and walk all the way down. Likewise I didn't check the path coming east down into Stanmer Village as I tested PyeWoo 1's poorly drawn steep and muddy path but I did look at either end....

The path through woodland just west of Falmer Village avoids 1.6km / 1 mi of road walking but it was winding, rooty and bumpy in places so you could just stick with the lane which was quiet. The "Garage" stop is next to the BP and not where the word Garage appears on OS Explorer maps. I was also told that most bus drivers do not stop at the "Saddlery" stop for route 17 as it is dangerous although perhaps they meant the stop by the Pyecombe overpass....

* A path has been moved to the field edge at ///users.juggle.sourcing but it has no practical effect. * Next, and worst, was at the small woodland west of Lower Standean. Scrambling through the woodland with no apparent path looked unpromising, my only choice was the private farm track outside of the woodland, also visible on both maps. It points east down the field edge, definitely not south into the woods. At the top of the very steep hill climb east of Stanmer Village is a mapped permissive path (OS and B&H online maps) that goes straight into the woodland but is now blocked by a reinforced fence. The true turn off is further north at a B&H fingerpost with a (muddy) kissing gate into the field. Not a biggie as I continued straight uphill but had I tried the east side instead it would have been through more car parking, missing the pleasant woodland edge. I've uploaded a new version of this route using the actual positions of usable paths, also avoiding the one very steep hill and with a very few small improvements...

It becomes slightly tricky to follow the right route through Sussex uni campus but only for a short time and Stanmer Wood makes it worthwhile....

The route was great; lots of flat, easy land, a few hills but nothing taxing. The website & its navigation could be better, not terribly intuitive and a little clunky at times....

Very simple route to follow, nice to walk along the race course path instead of next to the road for the top section. If you're starting near Happy Valley park in Woodingdean it's more interesting to walk up & over the fields instead of down Warren Road...Elm Grove is steep if coming from Brighton!...

Most of the route is on downland paths where the South Downs National Park butts up against the scruffy edges of Brighton. Some of the paths were slippery with chalky mud....

The Downland paths were quite well defined, though there was a short section where I was following hoof prints in the grass due to the fog....

Once over the road, a permissive bridle path heads briefly parallel to the main road then turns sharply to head uphill and onto the Downs. After crossing Ditchling Road the route heads into Stanmer Park towards the village which has a popular teashop. The path then heads into the campus of Sussex University (worth a look round), passing through and out to Falmer village....

Most of the walk approaching Brighton follows the race track where you can enjoy the beautiful panoramas of the coastline....

This is a pleasant walk into the city centre with fine views towards the sea and with a panorama of the whole city to the west....

This is a pleasant, direct and easy to follow route from the edge of Brighton into the centre of Lewes. Quite muddy when wet though!...

Walked as part of a longer walk to Lewes - so if you are doing the same then instead of going into Woodingdean itself, return to Warren Road before the end of the racecourse, and take the Drove Road where you will eventually join up with the Slow Way from Woodingdean to Lewes...

Really loved this walk - combined it with the Brighton to Woodingdean route with a small amend to that one to pick up the Drove Road earlier on Warren Road. Great views and no real challenges, though the chalk path downhill section from Castle Hill can need a little bit of care depending on the weather....
