I went straight down private road. Alternative here, is rather than the footpath between the railway and golf course, which gets very muddy in winter, go all the way down private road and then across Hylands park to Writtle....

The last half a mile or so of this route, in Basildon, walks alongside a ring road that isn't meant for pedestrians and even if you were to brave the verges you'd have a hard time crossing the roundabout. BilBas 2 fixes that problem and also uses a local nature reserve near Billericay for a greener and quieter walk which is only 450m longer...

Long section along main road with little or no pavement. Otherwise a nice route through fields & woods...

Between Billericay and Stock it's a lower quality: very muddy at parts and Stock golf course has a particularly badly marked footpath that seems to go right in the middle of holes! I'd suggest taking the more straightforward paths directly from billericay to stock, then following the route from there...

The route becomes more urban when approaching town but very quiet through Hutton mount....

I didn't follow the map exactly as I took a number of wrong turns. Enter Norsey Woods via Norsey Close (taking the left of the two pathway options). Follow the woods around in an anti-clockwise way (avoiding exiting onto any roads until you see footpath signpost 28 (then follow it)....

We had intended to go the entire way to Billericay but there is a section of Heath Road, just past Ramsden Heath, where the pavement ends and you have to walk on the road or narrow grassy verge....
