Help connect Chelmsford
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chelmsford’s Slow Ways.

Walking out of chelmsford didn't take long and we walked through galleywood in the Sunshine there were a few lovely buildings and fields the only main issue we had was at the roundabout near the a12 the path was really overgrown and not clear so we had to walk aorund the roundabout which was OK but probably not the safest! Stock was lovely and we met some lovely people on our way we finished in Wickford for the day overall I enjoyed it...

This is a lovely route taking you down from the centre of Chelmsford to Wickford. We spent a short time walking out of town but when we arrives through galleywood really started to open up some beautiful buildings and churches and amazing woodlands full of berries! There was one section at the roundabout as we approached the a12 junction the path was unclear so we had to make some adjustments to the path....

The footpath running around the south of Hyde Hall is charming, so it is unfortunate that you then face a stretch of road walking on Crephedge Lane with very little verge until you reach some pavement. The RHS really should invest in a safe walk and cycle route alongside this road between Woodham and Hyde Hall - their landholding could provide a significant part of this (they instead promote a more circuitous walking route using existing footpaths (that are not suitable for wheeling) and expect cyclists to use the accident-prone road)...

A varied walk through the suburbs of Chelmsford, fields and a few wooded areas....

Walked on a sunny day in mid-July, I really enjoyed the route which mixes time spent out in the open crossing fields, with stretches under the cover of woodland canopies. It depends on very little road walking which is great and there are some good pubs for breaks at points along the way....

A large section of the walk is on St Peters Way which runs from Ongar to Bradwell, so the footpaths were reliable and cleared....

Around the Wickham bishops area the path worsened, stretches were very overgrown with nettles and Brambles and finally approaching witham the path completely disappeared as the farmer hadn't maintained it. Using GPS I followed the route through the field but eventually ran into a wall of Brambles and had to backtrack and find an alternative route....

I've marked it down for some missing way marking on the ground, going via Writtle (which seems an unnecessary diversion), and for some ambiguous route alignment in Chelmsford. From the starting point in Chipping Ongar, the mapped route goes north up the High Street before turning east on Love Lane going past Ongar Sports Club and out into agricultural fields. You’ll swiftly leave ways with this though and soon after reach a point where the Essex Way and St Peter’s Way meet your path and them diverge. (I think a preferable way out of town would be to go a little south down the High Street and turn east onto Castle Street, taking St Peter’s Way recreational path from its starting point where it shares the route with the Essex Way, this soon meets the described route but avoids the pavement stomp for a quicker way into the countryside). A set of concrete stairs exits into a High Ongar cul-de-sac which may initially confuse but the mapped route swiftly takes you around to Mill Lane where the route proceeds again across agricultural fields. At this point, I found the route onwards difficult to to discern. One hopes a clear route will soon be signposted again - but a quick search online indicates that others have had trouble here trying to follow St Peter’s Way. Going north along the track through the Writtle Belt of trees eventually takes you to a pedestrian/cyclist underpass beneath the A414 and a route skirting the east of Writtle before rejoining the mapped path.]....

Paper Mill lock at the halfway point has a cafe, and you can sit out on the canal with a cup of tea and rest your feet. River path gets very muddy and floods in places after heavy rain, so not recommended when the water is high....

Between Billericay and Stock it's a lower quality: very muddy at parts and Stock golf course has a particularly badly marked footpath that seems to go right in the middle of holes! I'd suggest taking the more straightforward paths directly from billericay to stock, then following the route from there...

The bit through the housing estate in Witham is a bit tricky but fine if you just remember to head south. Muddy and wet underfoot near the canal as you would expect at this time of year....
