Help connect Wickford
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wickford’s Slow Ways.

Walk this routeWould recommend this walk from Wickford to Rayleigh getting out of town wasn't difficult and once into the woodland the scenery was great. Easy going on the feet and not too hilly I'd recommend it was there some nice history to the area...

The route from Wickford to Rayleigh is a easy route through some farm land and quite a lot of residential areas. Some of the footpaths are seldom used so required some overgrown branches to be pushed back but nothing too bad and they were still accessible. Rayleigh has lots of amenities including a well connected train station so a great route to connect the two towns....

Walking out of chelmsford didn't take long and we walked through galleywood in the Sunshine there were a few lovely buildings and fields the only main issue we had was at the roundabout near the a12 the path was really overgrown and not clear so we had to walk aorund the roundabout which was OK but probably not the safest! Stock was lovely and we met some lovely people on our way we finished in Wickford for the day overall I enjoyed it...

This is a lovely route taking you down from the centre of Chelmsford to Wickford. We spent a short time walking out of town but when we arrives through galleywood really started to open up some beautiful buildings and churches and amazing woodlands full of berries! There was one section at the roundabout as we approached the a12 junction the path was unclear so we had to make some adjustments to the path....

The broad and quiet Doublegate Lane takes you over the railway and, a bit later, over the A130 and deposits you on London Road. From here it's suburban streets through to Rayleigh railway station....

A varied walk through the suburbs of Chelmsford, fields and a few wooded areas....

Thankfully, the path goes under the road beneath bridges before a simple crossing over the railway tracks (steps on either side). The footpath takes you to a bridge over the railway line then onwards to the Burnham Road (A132). Back on the south side of the Burnham Road, there’s now a footpath across fields, running largely parallel to the railway line, taking you to a footbridge over to Woodham Fen. On the east side of Woodham Fen, there’s an underpass beneath Ferrers Road leading directly to a footway that goes all the way to South Woodham Ferrers station...

After crossing the A130,doublegate Lane is a concreted path leading to Doublegate Farm. When you cross the entrance to Wick Country Park you should be able to continue along the field to the roundabout at Salcott Cres, but this path has been deliberately sabotaged : The entrance to the path is completely overgrown with hawthorn, and just inside there is a manmade mound of earth blocking what was the path....

Photo 1 shows where you break away from Wickford High Street, by an estate agents. Photo 4 illustrates where the route takes you away from the trucks and gravel pits onto a bridleway, shortly before crossing the A130....

As in route description- we actually walked the ‘alternative’ way into Rayleigh, crossing the railway at the station (which feels a bit cheeky) and going up the Mount to see what’s there....

I didn't follow the map exactly as I took a number of wrong turns. Enter Norsey Woods via Norsey Close (taking the left of the two pathway options). Follow the woods around in an anti-clockwise way (avoiding exiting onto any roads until you see footpath signpost 28 (then follow it)....

We had intended to go the entire way to Billericay but there is a section of Heath Road, just past Ramsden Heath, where the pavement ends and you have to walk on the road or narrow grassy verge....
