Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

29 Aug 2022Long section along main road with little or no pavement. Otherwise a nice route through fields & woods.

Walked the route today from Billericay station to Wickford station. I didn't follow the map exactly as I took a number of wrong turns.
Some things to note:
Enter Norsey Woods via Norsey Close (taking the left of the two pathway options)
Follow the woods around in an anti-clockwise way (avoiding exiting onto any roads until you see footpath signpost 28 (then follow it)
Heath Road is not great to walk down but think easier from Billericay to Wickford rather than the reverse. Will stop in Nags Head next time.
At the Castledon Rd stage the footpath is to the right of the Coffee Shop (enter via the drive for the farm). Beware of the cows though they pretty much chased me and my dog Margot out of the field.
When you are approaching Wickford there are a number of options of paths. I took the wrong one (the one that went straight) and ended up in Carlton Road. What I should have done was take the path diagonally right which would have been more scenic and direct I am sure.
Overall walk was fine with the highlight easily Norsey Woods which was in full splendour with its bluebells on display.
Trip took me three hours but plenty of wrong turns and lunch slowed me. Should be more 2 and half hours really.
Route worth walking.

08 May 2021 (edited 27 Jun 2023)We walked half of this route, going from Wickford to just past Ramsden Heath. It was a lovely walk across a number of fields and along quiet paths, and my kids enjoyed climbing over the stiles.
We had intended to go the entire way to Billericay but there is a section of Heath Road, just past Ramsden Heath, where the pavement ends and you have to walk on the road or narrow grassy verge. The road bends sharply right further up and we couldn't see how far we would have to walk along the road. Cars were fast and I was walking with two children, so it didn't feel safe proceeding. We drove the route another day and the on-road section is actually not very far - just around the corner - so adult walkers might be happy doing it.
Overall, the section of the route that we walked was pleasant and family-friendly. The ground is a bit rough in places and there are several stiles, so definitely not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
We would walk the (half) route again and will see if there's an alternative way to get all the way to Billericay.
