Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

28 Apr 2024I ran this route on Wednesday 24th April 2024. It was mostly easy paths, but waterlogged in places.
There were a few places where you could get confused.
The path across the golf course is not clear. I went straight across, following the map, but would be better going around.
At South Hill Farm turn right after the buildings and then left. Use the OS map here, don't go straight up as implied by the slow ways map.
In Galleywood the route has a diversion to the pub, which is pointless unless you want a drink, a rest or a meal. I went straight down private road.
Alternative here, is rather than the footpath between the railway and golf course, which gets very muddy in winter, go all the way down private road and then across Hylands park to Writtle. However you must take care crossing the A414 as the traffic is travelling very fast. On the main route you have to cross A414 twice, while only once on this alternative.

19 Mar 2022I walked this from Chelmsford to Billericay - took about 3.5/4 hours in total. Between Stock and Chelmsford you get some really nice views and varied paths. Between Billericay and Stock it's a lower quality: very muddy at parts and Stock golf course has a particularly badly marked footpath that seems to go right in the middle of holes! I'd suggest taking the more straightforward paths directly from billericay to stock, then following the route from there.
