Help connect Brentwood
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brentwood’s Slow Ways.

This walk started well with walks along the pavement in the town, this part is not particularly attractive. After a whole you head off into Woodland which is quite pretty. We followed the map but there was new fencing and when we got to the point in the photo marked by the bridge there was no way to proceed straight as the map suggested....

There is not much in Stapleford, a beautiful Church and a good Gastropub (The Rabbits). More fields, short parts along quiet roads, and farm tracks all lead to The Mores Woodland where bluebells were just beginning to pop up, this will look superb when the flowers come out. This is a beautiful and varied walk, which will be more so in the warmer months....

Walk this routeThe route cuts through private land with closed gate. then having got back on track by going North and around but further on there was an illegally locked gate on a right-of-way. I found an alternative route down a bridleway close-by and have posted it as Stabren two....

A huge muddy field with no obvious path was a small challenge but otherwise a very pleasant walk with much to commend it....

The first part out of Romford is along quite grey roads but the rest of the way is green and pleasant....
Strider
A route which is generally pretty enjoyable but loses a star due to a tricky section near Little Burstead. The walk into Basildon is quite long and, thanks to some residential meandering and Gloucester Park and Basildon Sporting Village, doesn't require much walking along busy roads....

Beyond the lovely Harold Wood Park and a brief flirtation with the London Loop the walk takes on a decidedly rural feel. The stiles before you cross the M25 by road bridge were in poor repair and lower lying sections of path were decidedly boggy....

The only problem area is the path from the byway (Green Lane) south of Botney Hill Road, which is largely unmarked through a scrubby field and then a large clay field (the aerial photos suggest there is a cut line in summer). From Brentwood, we head south along pavements and shortcut paths, then take the footpath south through Harts Wood, which is mostly easy to follow with occasional waymarks. The field path from Billericay Road is well used, clear and easy to follow, Note that the path along the south side of the drainage ditch is better than the right of way on the north side. We go straight on onto Botney Hill Road then right down the Green Lane byway....

Walk this routeThe crossing used on this route has a central refuge but no lights, so requires a little care - there is a pelican crossing to the north but it is some distance from the route (see RomBre two). This route takes the first easy entrance into Tyler's Common, and used well used paths to reach the north-east corner....

Walk this routeOver half the route is off-road, mostly through a a chain of publicly owned bits of land (local councils and Forestry England) which are part of the fantastic Thames Chase cross-boundary woodland creation and habitat linkage project. It's a shame about the un-pavemented road walking on Mascalls Lane but traffic and verges seemed better than the alternative on Nags Head Lane in RomBre 1. Brentwood is at the top of a hill, and there are a few other fairly gentle / short hills until Harolds Wood, then it's flat into Romford....

After downloading the gpx file and uploading it to OS Maps we followed the route in reverse as the gpx route went from Brentwood to Romford. The first part of the walk is along straight residentials roads for approx 2 miles from Romford station, past Gidea Park and towards Hornchurch where the road meets a dual carriageway (A127). There appears to be footpaths on the map that take you into Tyler's common but these were overgrown and inaccessible when we walked the route so we had to walk along the road for a while. At the end of Nags Head Lane you turn right onto Brook Street which continues onto London road towards Brentwood passing some shops and pubs. The route takes you right at Westwood Avenue through a residential area via Brentwood station and then back towards the town center. After passing the station and walking up the hill on Queens Road, the route takes you left onto at Thomas road....

The intention behind this route is inviting: walk from Brentwood to West Horndon utilising pleasant woodland leading to a local, well known Country Park which you then walk the length of. Unfortunately the connection between the top of Thorndon Country Park and West Horndon requires you to cross the busy A127 Southend Arterial Road which is very far from being safe and, as such, something we did not attempt....

The route becomes more urban when approaching town but very quiet through Hutton mount....

Enjoyable walk that minimises road walking until arriving in Brentwood and takes in different terrains en route....
