Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s Slow Ways.

A lovely route, mainly grassy paths along the top of the cliffs following the signs of the Coast Path....

This is a fabulous route, but the first thing to say is that we really shouldn't have Slow Ways this long! Like the previous reviewer, I based myself half in Alnwick, half in Berwick, and used the X15/X18/418 buses to get to/from my daily start/finish. Fabulous as the route is overall, it's hard to give it a perfect 5 stars. I sometimes stayed on the Coast Path rather than follow the route drawn; for example, just south of Berwick, I could not see why I should leave a gorgeous and well maintained national trail to take a parallel route inland beside the mainline railway!...

A gorgeous route stretching along the coast, including passing Holy Island. It's easy to get onto the route from Berwick railway station, passing through the town and onto the coastal path, which is sturdy underfoot....

We walked this route across two days - from Berwick to Belford, and then Belford to Alnwick. The first day is beautiful, with coastal paths which are easy to navigate - when walking from north to south, keep the sea on the left! The woodland above Fenwick is beautiful and calm, offering a very different terrain to the earlier coastal paths. Belford to Alnwick - parts of this route are less scenic than the coastal paths from the day before. After the final crossing of the A1 it is a fair-going route into Alnwick with beautiful views of the castle....

The route south from Berwick is easy to find and navigate, making good use of the coast path, with plenty of opportunities to deviate onto the beach and seafront. Once into the fields the going can be muddy, and crossing the A1 can take time, but the route makes good use of St Cuthbert's and St Oswald's Ways. We climbed to the west, through the woodland, to make the road - if the fallen trees are cleared then the path will be usable again, but at present it is not. Going continues good along farm tracks, with a little tricky navigation through the woods at Rock South Farm At Braxfield we opted to not cut the corner through the woodland as again there seemed to be a large number of fallen trees on the path...

The route is almost the same as Beraln three except near Holy Island. The odd retracing of the route takes you to Beal Farm campsite, cafe and resturant. There is the option to go across to Holy Island - on a bike use the tidal causeway (check tide times for low water)....

I agree with the other two reviewers...this route is an absolutely stunning coastal walk. Agree that the route should be modified to start in Berwick-Upon-Tweed town centre and should follow the signposted coastal route. I think this route should be verified as part of the official Slow Ways network....

The first is at Marshall Meadows where it takes a diversion to Marshall Meadows Country House and the second is at Burnmouth where it goes into Upper Burnmouth for some reason and also the route doesn't accurately follow the signposts. Also, coming into Eyemouth, the route takes you into the golf club after crossing the road whereas the signposted route is right and past Eyemouth FC football ground....

I walked this beast of a route over three days, using the X15 and X18 buses to get to and from my hotel each night. The final stretch from Craster to Alnwick is a little underwhelming in that it’s more road walking (though none that were too bad, always a verge or a quiet enough road) and countryside field hopping, but I was mostly underwhelmed after experiencing the most stunning stretch of footpaths I’d ever walked before! - The route is perfectly drawn except for the bit through the Alnwick Gardens. Instead, just stick to the pavement until you get to the Alnwick Gardens car park, then follow the signs for “town centre” past the café and shop. I’ve drawn this up and posted it below as a picture (orange line is the route you have to take). If you’re coming from Alnwick, follow the purple line until you reach the gated entrance to the castle, and that’s where you turn right onto the orange line I’ve drawn....

A much better route is to walk along the tarmac path on the north side of the River Tweed upriver from Berwick as far as Whitesands Shiel, and then turn up the hill along Askew's Walk. After you go through Hutton, rather than turn into the grounds of Hutton Castle at East Lodge as currently marked, just carry on past Hutton Hall Barns farm (Border Eggs) and turn right, rejoining the route as marked at West Lodge....

It is a varied route through large estate woodlands (suffering from winter storms), low moorlands, mixed farming country with a great coastal stretch into Berwick....

I was staying at Berwick on Tweed and it is easy to take the bus to Eyemouth (or farther) and walk the trail back....
