Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Mar 2022The existing route sends you (from Berwick) past New Water Haugh and across the B6461 to the Whiteadder Water at Canty's Brig. The section before you get to the A1 is over very rough ground that is often flooded. Once you are across the A1, stretches of the B6461 have no good place to walk, and there are some really bad blind curves with fast-moving traffic. A much better route is to walk along the tarmac path on the north side of the River Tweed upriver from Berwick as far as Whitesands Shiel, and then turn up the hill along Askew's Walk. When you get to the paved road, cross and follow the path up the hill, turning to your right and over a low wire fence, then about 20m through that pasture, turning left and over the wooden fence (easier than it sounds, trust me) and then up the steps. This brings you out on the side of the A1, with good visibility in both directions. Cross safely and follow this lane (the Paxton Turnpike), joining the route as currently marked at Bumblebee Cottage just before the border. The man at Edrington Castle Mains Farm has a couple of big black dogs which bark and run towards you, but they're okay.
After you go through Hutton, rather than turn into the grounds of Hutton Castle at East Lodge as currently marked, just carry on past Hutton Hall Barns farm (Border Eggs) and turn right, rejoining the route as marked at West Lodge. I haven't walked the stretch from Bluestane Ford to Allanton -- it might be possible, but it might not. The section from Crumstane in to Duns is along an old railway route, and it is smooth and easy walking.
There is a route from Paxton to Duns through Whitsome and over Mouth Bridge that I think is better (and probably a bit shorter) that I will try to add later.
