Help connect Aspull

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Aspull’s Slow Ways.

Leaving Standish involved a narrow path, which at the time (after a long rainy spell) was very muddy, and then a footbridge over the railway, before a walk up the pavement of a fairly busy road to reach the canal at Red Rock....

Quite long walk along canal, really good views of Standish and a nice stroll through an open forest. End of the walk included a bridge across a train track, through a housing estate and into town back to centre of Standish....

At the end of the canal section of the walk you enter a beautiful and secluded grassy plain with lots of dragon flies....

Leaving from Wigan Wallgate we headed south east then joined the Leeds Liverpool Canal which forms most of the route. Leaving the canal we then headed through Kirklees wood/Woodshaw Ruck and then through to the finish in the centre of Aspull....

The route starts on residential footpaths it then enters a field with no real footpath but a number of sheep and inquisitive horses....

Careful at ///ferrets.frame.discussed as the footpath here is not the continuation of the route the route continues along St Wilfrids Rd (///wage.damp.autumn)....

Walk this route

This is a walk of 2 halves, a rather depressing walk through residential area, or countryside bordering residential areas (containing disappointing levels of detritus), and pleasing open aspects and woodland walks (from Top lock). Apart from a few narrow gaps and low steps there weren’t any obstructions and the path was good and reasonably dry (even after a wet spell). On parts of the first section I felt a little closed in by the surrounding vegetation....
