Help connect Blackrod

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Blackrod’s Slow Ways.

A cobbled path leads us down to the railway bridge (unavoidable steps on both sides). The path up to the motorway bridge is well trodden and obvious. Just before the motorway bridge we turn left to follow the service station fences to join a farm lane (there doesn't seem to be anything to prevent a diagonal shortcut across the pasture from the railway bridge). We follow the north/east bank of the river past the mill and under the railway bridge, then follow a surfaced road right which leads through an industrial estate to emerge on Chorley Road....

Beyond Great Bank Road you can either follow the private lane or try to find the narrow footpath parallel to it on the north side - the latter is probably where the right of way is, but its start is easy to miss. We are soon on the edge of fields, and a track takes us into Carlies farm, where signposts direct walkers around the north side of the buildings to the farm road beyond, which we follow. The GPX file is misleading - the path emerges immediately opposite the side road we need to take half right, which we soon leave on a signposted footpath, which joins a farm lane. Beyond Scot Lane we head along the farm lane into Yate's Farm, where the footpath line could do with more waymarks (if in doubt, just follow the lane into the farm yard, then look for the north east corner. This last path is the worst part of the route - there is no clear waymarking and the route past Sibberings Farm involves three very awkward narrow high hurdles and a very churned up horse pasture [if I did it again I would be tempted to stay on the farm lane, but that is not a right of way, or use the path up to Limbridge Drive]....

The route starts on residential footpaths it then enters a field with no real footpath but a number of sheep and inquisitive horses....

Walk this route

I chose this route as I wanted a more direct route to Westhoughton, and given a period of very wet weather I wanted to avoid some very muddy footpaths included in Blackwes one. This route follows a busy road and while it is not very inspiring it is wheel friendly (parts of Blackwes one aren't)....

A good and safe walk but you will encounter a number of obstacles on the route - stiles, kissing gates, narrow gates, a steep stepped bridge over the railway line and a steep stepped section of path....
