Help connect Westhoughton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Westhoughton’s Slow Ways.

Beyond Great Bank Road you can either follow the private lane or try to find the narrow footpath parallel to it on the north side - the latter is probably where the right of way is, but its start is easy to miss. We are soon on the edge of fields, and a track takes us into Carlies farm, where signposts direct walkers around the north side of the buildings to the farm road beyond, which we follow. The GPX file is misleading - the path emerges immediately opposite the side road we need to take half right, which we soon leave on a signposted footpath, which joins a farm lane. Beyond Scot Lane we head along the farm lane into Yate's Farm, where the footpath line could do with more waymarks (if in doubt, just follow the lane into the farm yard, then look for the north east corner. This last path is the worst part of the route - there is no clear waymarking and the route past Sibberings Farm involves three very awkward narrow high hurdles and a very churned up horse pasture [if I did it again I would be tempted to stay on the farm lane, but that is not a right of way, or use the path up to Limbridge Drive]....

A good short direct route, but quite pavement heavy - those with more time on their hands may prefer WesLos two, which uses what looked like a good path to avoid some of the pavement walking. From Lostock station we follow the pavement south, then turn left onto Tempest Road, staying on the south side....

At its end, a footpath between fences, before dropping down to a road, where we turn left under a railway viaduct, and then up steps on the right, heading uphill through some woods, away from the main path. At the end, onto another track, and then a right onto a footpath around an industrial estate. At its end, we join the road through the industrial estate, and then another footpath....

Again, it runs alongside the railway, and, once we pass a dog training centre, we pass through the farm yard and onto a road, passing over the railway on a bridge....

The remainder of the route consists of agricultural land, golf courses (the western side of Westhoughton appears to be made up of approximately 95% golf course) and wooded areas, before joining the road network around Wingate industrial estate....

Nice little walk not to strenuous, easily accessible for all, although at certain points you will need to cross the road as only one footpath, nice little park on tempest rd for a little rest and a drink, pass some nice little woodland meadows and rumworth reservoir, would recommend....

I chose this route as I wanted a more direct route to Westhoughton, and given a period of very wet weather I wanted to avoid some very muddy footpaths included in Blackwes one. This route follows a busy road and while it is not very inspiring it is wheel friendly (parts of Blackwes one aren't)....
