31 Mar 2024This was a very nice route but I’m very tempted to fail it because of three plotting inaccuracies. However, I suppose I only lost a few minutes at each one. Firstly, the path leaving Standish towards the railway has changed because of new housing, and it isn’t clear to a non-local which way to go, although if you stay as close to the line as you can, you will find your way. Secondly, access at both ends of the footpath between SD 60302 07872 and SD 60765 08034 is incorrectly shown.
Leaving Standish involved a narrow path, which at the time (after a long rainy spell) was very muddy, and then a footbridge over the railway, before a walk up the pavement of a fairly busy road to reach the canal at Red Rock. The route from here was very nice, especially with the blue sky and bright cumulus clouds. Across the canal I could see the golf course and Haigh Hall, which was shrouded in scaffolding.
The path through Haigh Woodland Park was really lovely, and I soon arrived at Aspull, just in time for the bus to Wigan.

25 Jun 2023Quite long walk along canal, really good views of Standish and a nice stroll through an open forest. End of the walk included a bridge across a train track, through a housing estate and into town back to centre of Standish.

25 Jun 2023We walked this from Aspull to Standish. The plotted route off Wigan Road is not quite right but we only had to backtrack a few yards then turned up Holly Lane instead before turning left onto Manor Grove to get to the public footpath through Crawfords Wood. We then headed through Haighs Lower Plantation an then joining the Leeds Liverpool Canal for an easy flat walk north before you come onto the B5239 at Red Rock. A short walk west from here then up over the (steep) steps of the bridge crossing the west coat railway line. There is then a short spell along an overgrown footpath into the bottom of Standish. Then it’s an uphill walk through into the town centre.

28 Feb 2022This is a good walk. You will encounter stiles, kissing gates, and steps.
Initially you follow the road and then a reasonable unsurfaced footpath. The route follows the Leeds Liverpool canal and the rejoins a road at Red Rock. A good footpath leads away from A5106 but it disappears as you move into a field.
There are steep steps on a railway crossing bridge at ///dawn.vest.drove. There is a temporary foot path at ///neck.vanish.verbs passing around a housing development that’s under construction. Careful at ///ferrets.frame.discussed as the footpath here is not the continuation of the route the route continues along St Wilfrids Rd (///wage.damp.autumn).
