Description
At home, before testing out WigAsps One and Two, I created this route which makes full use of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It also uses a less muddy path at the Aspull end

25 Jun 2023Lovely but very long walk along the canal. About 2/5 of the way through there’s a really nice pub by the side of the Canal. At the end of the canal section of the walk you enter a beautiful and secluded grassy plain with lots of dragon flies. Definitely a fun path to cycle &/or walk. Slightly up hill but nothing major.

25 Jun 2023This was a great route. Leaving from Wigan Wallgate we headed south east then joined the Leeds Liverpool Canal which forms most of the route. Leaving the canal we then headed through Kirklees wood/Woodshaw Ruck and then through to the finish in the centre of Aspull.

08 Feb 2023Leaving Aspull the route passed the rugby club and headed into the Woodland Trust’s Kirkless Wood, which had pleasant grassed walkways between the trees. This was accessed via a cycle squeeze barrier. I saw a couple of rabbits in the woods here. Then a couple of bridges led to the canal towpath, with a pub next to it. After the first two locks, at Cale Lane, the former derelict Commercial Inn had a fabulous “Canal in Wigan” themed mural.
The canal towpath made up 50% of the route and descended steadily along a series of locks. It was wide and fully surfaced. At the time I walked it, the sun was setting ahead of me, which made for some lovely views.
There were a couple of road crossings where rather than the towpath going under the road bridge, it was necessary to cross the road via a zebra crossing. (Not sure where the horses would have gone in the olden days…)
The last section along roads into town was heavy with rush hour traffic, but there were good pedestrian crossings. King Street at the end was quite nice.
A very straightforward and enjoyable walk.
