Help connect Woodley
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Woodley’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
There is a lot of new housing and other development (including the Shinfield film studios and the British Museum Archaeological Resource Collection) around Spencers Wood and Shinfield in what, until recently, was open countryside, so expect temporary diversions in these areas due to construction sites....
Berkshire Walker
Building work in Shinfield has blocked the route at SU 72872 67760 but it is possible to go around the building site...
Alice Norman
It is easy to overlook but the route doesn't go round the Heron on the Ford pub but turns right just before it....
Petr Sadilek
Unfortunately, once the route leaves the park, it is pavement walking all the way into Wokingham, including a stretch along the busy Reading Road....
Martin Ellis
The first part starts from Woodley town centre and follows the fairly boring but very accessible suburban pavements of Woodley....
Berkshire Walker
This is a great choice of route, a pragmatic selection for getting there quickly, decent scenery and quiet roads. I disagree with other peoples opinions that its not the prettiest route, there aren't any real improvements you can make without walking miles for the sake of it....
Oliver Dungey
This route leads mostly through an urban area, a long stretch of it along busy Reading Road in Wokingham....
Petr Sadilek
Route starts in shopping centre with cafés, then through Dinton Pastures Country Park, which can be muddy & rough, but has a café....
Mike Beardmore
The route is not the most scenic overall, but has some nice sections and it's very easy to extend further along the river (it connects to the Thames Path) or explore nearby areas....

Spencers Wood to Woodley (Spewoo 1) review. The walk starts by a post office in Spencers Wood, with road walking and a byway (Photo 1). The route does pass a pleasant lake and park (Photo 6). This route does meet the Slow Way criteria and I can’t see a better alternative between Spencers Wood and Woodley....
Martin Ellis
It starts from Reading Station and passes Reading Museum and the historic Abbey Quarter before an interesting urban walk beside the Kennet and Avon canal, past Blake's Lock before joining the Thames Path at Kennetmouth. There is a pleasant walk through Thames Valley Park before a more suburban and less interesting section, mostly on residential streets through Earley and Woodley, before finishing at the small pedestrianised Woodley town centre....
Berkshire Walker
See the Reading to Twyford (Reatwy 1) route for an alternate path which takes in Forbury Gardens and the abbey ruins....
Martin Ellis
Watch out for the easily overlooked footpath sign off Waingels Road (Photo 1). A narrow footpath (Photo 2) leads to a pleasant bird sanctuary (Photo 3). The route ends at the ‘Waggon & Horses’ pub on Bath Road (Photo 10) and a short walk into Twyford....
