Twyford (Wokingham) to Bracknell 3 (Twybra 3) review. The urban walk out from Bracknell Station makes good use of parks and a path by The Cut river (Photos 1 & 2). It’s a short urban walk to arrive at Twyford Station....

Walk this routeReatwy two avoids the locked gate within Reading Abbey Ruins (flagged in a previous review), and also removes an unnecessary diversion away from the River Thames at Sonning....

As a Reading resident, I agree with the slight changes from Reatwy 1. This is the route I take into the town centre. It closely follows the footpath alongside the Kennet including the Oscar Wilde Memorial Walk (Photo 1)....

Note: I walked the route Bracknell to Twyford. Unfortunately, there isn’t a public right of way across Billingbear Park. I’ve looked for radically different routes for this Slow Way, but would argue the plotted route either side of the park is the best we are likely to find. I took a two mile detour along the Maidenhead Road, turned right onto The Straight Mile (SU823717), and right again onto a path between the Billingbear golf course and park. A footpath then leads through the middle of the exclusive polo club; right past the clubhouse, immaculate playing field and the other end of the driveway....

An enjoyable mainly traffic free and quiet route, especially the rural middle section between Ruscombe and Lillibrooke Manor, taking in several pretty villages, old manors, and historic churches, with plenty of wildlife, and a few country pubs on route. Section through suburban Maidenhead less interesting as expected....

From Twyford train station it’s a short urban walk to the rail bridge (Photo 1) and onto footpaths. The urban walk into Maidenhead follows the cycle route to the train station, via a park; and then to the town centre....

I subscribe to what the previous reviewer has written. It is one of the most enjoyable walks around Twyford. I would just add that it is not necessary to cross the street at Sonning....

A Slow Way that follows the excellent Thames Path National Trail from Henley via Shiplake to Sonning, then loops back to a final walk into Twyford. The route through Shiplake skips a loop of the Thames Path created in 2020....

It follows the Thames Path from Henley to Lower Shiplake, where it then continues to use the *older* route of the Thames Path to Shiplake, from where it then continues to Sonning Bridge, which you cross, and then you backtrack on the other side of the Thames to go to Charvil, from which you then walk along a busy road and, after crossing a really busy roundabout with no pedestrian crossing, you make it to Twyford. The section south of where you leave the Thames is the least pleasant, but the rest is a lovely walk, albeit with some narrow sections. At the time of walking, Marsh Lock was not accessible as it's being refurbished, but I followed the Thames Path diversion that was well signed....
Derick Rethans
Ah this is a gorgeous riverside route, but the route line at Reading Abbey/Oscar Wilde memorial walk delivered me to locked double gates; the open pedestrian gates are nearby, but I was in a picky mood and decided that I would correct the route and resubmit as Reatwy Two, rather than sign off a route with a built in backtrack, and the strong possibility that anyone approaching from the Twyford side may miss the Abbey ruins altogether. So please use Reatwy Two, it has a couple of tiny tweaks, as well as the Abbey access correction, which I think improve the walk overall....

Very enjoyable route with a pleasant stretch alongside the Thames, and an excellent off road approach to Reading. The path along the Thames to Sonning is on the unfashionable side - it’s a fishing path with fishing stations every so often, but you have to be a club member if you want to catch your lunch here. The other side of the river is the main Thames long distance footpath. Between Sonning and Reading the path is wide and well used, and there’s a lock for amusement, with plenty of benches for spectators. On the approach to Reading the path turns to follow the river Kennet into central Reading....

I think it’s the result of the public right of way being moved from the main driveway, to the field alongside, at some point in the past, but OS maps hasn’t caught up and still shows it coming up the main drive. So … at Lillibrook Manor follow the path in the field alongside the main gravel drive, whichever direction you are coming from! After leaving Twyford and walking along a road (pavement) for a while, there comes the start of an absolutely gorgeous series of woodland, field and lane which emerges in due course at Waltham St Lawrence. Leaving Waltham St Lawrence the route now heads to White Waltham....

The only spot where I was misled was close to Maidenhead at Lillibrooke Manor where I entered a graveled road via a wide gate only to find 50m down the road that there is no exit and I had to climb a fence to get to the stile next to it....

It is easy to overlook but the route doesn't go round the Heron on the Ford pub but turns right just before it....
Petr Sadilek
The ‘Heron on the Ford’ pub is a short detour to the west (use the bridge and cross a field to a second bridge, as the lane itself fords the river!). The Slow Way soon leaves the lane at a footpath which follows the River Loddon (Photo 1)....

Watch out for the easily overlooked footpath sign off Waingels Road (Photo 1). A narrow footpath (Photo 2) leads to a pleasant bird sanctuary (Photo 3). The route ends at the ‘Waggon & Horses’ pub on Bath Road (Photo 10) and a short walk into Twyford....

I'm not sure if weekdays are different but on Saturday, when I was walking there, gates in front and back of the farm were closed and the only option was to climb it. If a by-pass was suggested in the case the gates are closed I'd recommend this route....
