Help connect Wokingham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wokingham’s Slow Ways.

As everyone who has walked this says it is very urban and has a lot of walking by major roads....

I actually really enjoyed the route as it meandered out of Wokingham and across the countryside but as soon as I got to the new housing estate between Shinfield and Spencer's Wood I found the way blocked by construction work....

The route from Wokingham railway station leads initially along busy urban streets but turns to a somewhat hidden wide country lane after a bridge over the Emm Brook and before a roundabout. When you cross Wellington Avenue and walk up the Fisher's Copse, the route descends towards the Moor Green nature reserve....

The route starts with a straight path through a meadow to reach crossroads where walkers need to take Bramshill Road. There is mostly no greater town on the route with the exception of Arborfield Cross where there is a shop and an inn. The rest of the route from Arborfield Cross takes another wide footpath down to a ford and up to Barkham...

Walk this routeThere are two attractive woodland walks on the way north towards Wokingham: Simons Wood and the Gorrick Plantation (Photos 3 & 4). It emerges close to the centre of Wokingham for amenities, and a short final walk to Wokingham Train Station....

A well-planned Slow Way that avoids the many noisy roads of the area; for a quiet byway, woodland paths, and the Blackwater Valley Path. There is a short urban walk north to join the Blackwater Valley Path....

The Bramshill Road includes a stretch too dangerous for me to verify. The route out of Heckfield is alongside B-roads with narrow verges (Photo 1). It is a pity the road is so bad, as it passes the attractive Bramshill Plantation (Photo 3). I was looking for an alternative route from Hecksfield that avoids the dangerous road, perhaps via Bramshill Plantation....

The trainline bridge was just about manageable by carrying the buggy over although my 3 year old got out so I could carry it over....

Spencers Wood to Wokingham (Spewok 1) review. There’s an urban walk from Wokingham Station to the turning onto a byway towards Arborfield Cross. The route then follows Church Lane and a footpath (Photo 4). The walk into Spencers Wood is via back streets and a byway....

The Slow Way crosses the Eastern Relief Road and soon turns right onto a footpath (Photo 2). The Slow Way leaves the lane, which becomes a private access road for farm vehicles, for a byway running parallel. The Slow Way skips a loop of the byway via the private access road (Photo 4)....

There is a nice footpath (Photo 3) before an urban walk to end at Bracknell train station....

Walk this routeNote: I walked the route Bracknell to Wokingham. The route begins at Bracknell Station. I walked the route at 4pm Friday, so I can only hope the road is quieter at other times!...

Locals told me the road east may be used out of term time for a detour to The White Horse pub on the Easthampton Road. There is some street walking into the centre of Crowthorne, which has plenty of amenities....

Bracknell and Wokingham have been approaching each other for some time which means any route between them leads mainly through urban spaces....

Walk this routeThe ‘Heron on the Ford’ pub is a short detour to the west (use the bridge and cross a field to a second bridge, as the lane itself fords the river!). The Slow Way soon leaves the lane at a footpath which follows the River Loddon (Photo 1)....

Unfortunately, once the route leaves the park, it is pavement walking all the way into Wokingham, including a stretch along the busy Reading Road....

This route leads mostly through an urban area, a long stretch of it along busy Reading Road in Wokingham....

Route starts in shopping centre with cafés, then through Dinton Pastures Country Park, which can be muddy & rough, but has a café....

The main issue I have with this route, however, is the section between Arborfield and Shinfield....
Petr Sadilek
This route has a long unappealing stretch from Wokingham station up to Winnersh and across a motorway which leads right next to busy Reading Road and then Robin Hood Lane....

Walkers are lucky to have this route available because there are many potential reasons why access could be restricted....

This is a skillfully selected route that branches off noisy Wokingham streets quite early - right before the second roundabout behind a small bridge....

Finding the start of the off road path quite difficult; it is between the BP Garage and entrance into Tesco but there is no footpath sign, it just looks like a private drive....

From Bracknell the walk is a fairly mundane walk along pavements through industrial estates of West Bracknell. After that, going out of town, it is along busy narrow country roads with no pavement or street lights. Not a suitable route for walking...

The first 5.5km is mostly wide paths with good surfaces, although barriers at the beginning and partway through would make it challenging for a wheelchair or mobility scooter to get through....

We walked this route today as far as Finchampstead where we turned down Heath Ride rather than go in to Simons Wood. At the point where you see woodcray / Garrick cottage make sure you take a right rather than going straight on or you will end up on a detour!...

It can be a bit muddy at times but the paths are in a pretty good state. There are a few gates to cross and a footbridge over the railway but it is manageable with a pram/bike....
