Help connect Torquay
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Torquay’s Slow Ways.

It was a stiflingly hot day, so I had a cold drink before leaving St Marychurch, knowing from previous visits that there would be a lot of ups and downs along the route....

It's short, flat and easy, but apart from an initial promenade walk, the route runs too close to a very busy main road. It was a hot and sweaty day, so not particularly pleasant for walking, but at least I had something better to look forward to....

I followed the route on the app and a couple of times the route is plotted between two footpaths that end up at the same point, so at times I didn't know what path to take but in actual fact it didn't matter too much as they ended up in the same location. And be wary from Edginswell to North Willborough it's mostly road (although it's the John Musgrave Trail) I had to disappear into a couple of hedges to allow cars to pass! I walked out via Cary's Orchard which I'm not sure was the correct way as there was a gravel path I was meant to take on the other side of the hedge but enjoyed walking through the orchard. Walking through the Geopark was lovely, I enjoyed all the sights and walking past the fields of wheat. Very pretty houses and gardens, more quiet road walking and a pub "The Linny". I was a bit worried when I saw a tractor warning sign when walking on a path out of the village but I didn't meet any tractors. Not sure why the route tries to take you to the busy road so I went along the St Marychurch Rd away from the road and joined up with the path...

Possibly avoidable by leaving the village at the NE point and doubling back a little after crossing the main road but not necessary that day. NB no footpath along that fast main road. Just across the main road is a place selling locally made ice-cream, I wish I'd not bought a pre wrapped lolly in the Coop! Turning onto the road into Compton felt busier than the geography suggested, I had been told this road would be quieter than Ipplepen Rd further west. The road was wide but that meant the drivers didn't slow, not necessarily unsafe but I felt antsy. In winter, with no nettles, and maybe more views it might be a 4 depending on dirt bikes (my walk was on a very sunny Sunday which probably mattered). If I had sensibly worn long trousers, and long sleeves, and had more time I think I would have put up with the dirt bikes, felt happier with the traffic and completed it. But actually I was sufficiently put off by nettles, dirt bikes and traffic to not complete it....

A lovely route through woodlands and then following a road into Torquay. Follow the A3022, (pavements both sides) there are chances to cross over to the right hand side of the road to walk on the promenade overlooking the sea. If you want to walk to the station via Seaway Lane and you are walking from Marldon, it is beneficial to be on the left hand side of the road (side of road furthest away from the sea), cross at The Livermead House sign traffic lights so you don’t have to walk down to the main junction or try to time it correctly to avoid the traffic when crossing the road. There are toilets on the other side of the road opposite Seaway Lane (disabled ones need a key) as well as toilets at Torquay Station....

This appears to follow the same route as Ipptor one and therefore has the same access issue at East Linhay. The plotted route which would cross the A380 is not a public way. I do not recommend....

To avoid this requires quite a deviation in order to find a safe crossing of the A380 dual carriageway and therefore a different way from there into Torquay. From Ipplepen the route initially follows footpath and quiet lanes but then picks up a lovely bridleway. The way continues on unmetalled or quiet lanes. Instead I followed a bridleway that runs parallel to the A380, it’s behind a hedge but noisy. It continues as an unmetalled road, restricted to non motorised traffic, to Marldon where a pedestrian underpass at Marldon five lanes runabout enables safe crossing (follow the John Musgrave Heritage Trail or Torbay Totnes Trail waymarks)....
Helen C
I would not recommend this route as there is an access issue at East Linhay - the plotted route to and across the A380 is not a recorded public highway and a sign at the entrance makes clear that it is private....

Very good route, mostly on the John Musgrave Heritage Trail which is well signposted and easy to follow. The paths are generally good and I would imagine they don't get too muddy in the winter. Half hourly trains available at both ends to take you back to your start point....

Misses out on a 5th star because of some of the walking by roads... otherwise it's another great Slow Way for Devon!...

I should imagine the small path behind Preston Primary school to the west of Torbay Road gets overgrown, but it was fine for us....

Easy footpath through Penninn Plantation and then route joins bridleway and the John Musgrave Heritage Trail is followed all the way through to the Cockington Estate on the edge of Torquay. Shops, pubs and cafes at Kingskerswell. Nice walk on footpaths, bridleways, country lanes and pavements....

First half of walk is along main road and on a summer’s day was hot and noisy. On reaching outskirts of Preston route drops down through park to marine parade and promenade. If tide is out, it is possible to walk along beach to pier and Paignton sands....

This route snakes through the countryside largely following the John Musgrave Heritage Trail....

First, in Torquay it generally follows busy roads, rather than finding a quieter route (say, via Rock Walk, over the Warberries and Warberry Copse to Walls Hill)....
donrover
Approximately the first half is along side a busy road with a good footpath pavement although there’s a pinch point where the road and shared cycle & footpath have a pinch point reducing the path to around one metre fifty. A pleasant enough walk between the two town with the only hiccup being the current (hopefully temporary) closure of Garfield Road, but this can be bypassed using the parallel Beach Road to the south....
