Connect Paignton with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Paignton to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Paignton’s Slow Ways.

In Round Down Wood on the map the route takes you past the bridge and staying along the right hand side of the river, at the next “fork” it wants you to take the path on the left. There was no obvious way down so we continued on the same path which goes round to the right and eventually leads you back to where the left path would have taken you. This path snakes around and over a small bridge, it is narrow before the bridge but only for a short distance. Across the bridge the path goes over the river and to the left there are steps, and the path is uneven. If you follow the path you’re on and go to the right, you end up where you’re meant to be and carry on the route as normal. Coming out of the woodland you follow a narrow path between houses that leads you to a housing estate which you walk through....

I enjoyed walking this route as the sun was setting....

Finished at the seaside which is well served by amenities such a public toilets a small shop, ice cream and good pubs. I would recommend Totpai two which is a slightly more direct route....

Much of the way is off road, through Woodlands and along paths, there is a short part when you are walking alongside the road through a village so worth being cautious but it seemed a quiet road with good visibility ahead so not too concerning....

I added this new route option to make it slightly more direct, safe (avoiding a busier narrow lane) and to remove some steps....

Walk this routeUsing Coombe House Lane is preferable I think, so I'm going to share another route version that deals with this and takes out some steps....

Totnes and Paignton couldn’t be more different really - historic town with an alternative lifestyle vibe to English Riviera seaside resort. The route initially follows pavement out of Totnes then goes onto a beautiful old lane -Fleet Mill Lane, an unmetalled road - as far as Aish. Getting to the footbridge across the main road was a bit of a puzzle at first - walk along pavement to the entrance of Sainsbury’s then through carpark....

A very simple and easy walk! The highlight is the lovely Round Down wood, which I did get deliciously lost in... but quite easy to pick up the trail again....

The reward is stunning views, frequent benches, comfort stops and refreshments (seasonal) on the main beaches and Fishcombe Cove, and bracing sea air. The wooded stretch from Elberry Cove to Brixham can have muddy stretches following heavy rain in late Autumn, Winter and Spring and is more comfortably walked in boots or stout shoes than light weight sandals. From here the way climbs and meanders largely through lush, deciduous woodland as it follows the cliff contours round Churston and Fishcombe Coves and enters Brixham via Battery Gardens...

Combines woods (between Churston and Elberry) with sea glimpses; and for the rest of the route the sea is ever present by your side. Can swim at Churston beach (just out of Brixham), Elberry, Broadsands (loos and cafes too), Goodrington (stop at the lovely Cantina for a bite to eat) and, as a slight diversion, go round the outside of Roundham Head. Fair amount of ups and downs, so you'll need to be a reasonably fit walker....

First half of walk is along main road and on a summer’s day was hot and noisy. On reaching outskirts of Preston route drops down through park to marine parade and promenade. If tide is out, it is possible to walk along beach to pier and Paignton sands....

This is a beautiful route that largely follows the South Devon Coast path but it's let down by difficult mud in places. It can become unpassible in the autumn and winter months unless you don't mind deep, thick sludgy mud. Expect some sections of steep steps and exposed hillside but also beautiful views over the entire bay....

Approximately the first half is along side a busy road with a good footpath pavement although there’s a pinch point where the road and shared cycle & footpath have a pinch point reducing the path to around one metre fifty. A pleasant enough walk between the two town with the only hiccup being the current (hopefully temporary) closure of Garfield Road, but this can be bypassed using the parallel Beach Road to the south....
