Help connect Southwold

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Southwold’s Slow Ways.

Be careful to join the correct path around Dunwich and leaving Thorpeness. Generally, if you follow the coast, you'll be on track....

If coming from Benacre Wildlife reserve follow the metel finger post Footpath signs down to the reed beds then use the marsh as a Handle Bar to your left, head west ( keep it to your left) try to cross over through some light reeds ( ankle deep) Or at 5109 7979 where the metal finger posts direct you left keep straight and you will pick up the bridleway to take you onto the Main road. A better option that I usually take is to use the footpath adjacent to Valley road, then use the access road to the cottages and walk through to Leiston common where there is a permissive path across Sizewell Belts and into Kenton Hills which then links back to the lane to Eastbridge - a much more pleasant and traffic free walk...

Walk this route

Walk undertaken by two Blythburgh residents which is the mid-point for the route and from where there is a infrequent 99A bus service covering the route (excl Sundays). The footpath on the north bank of the River Blyth approaching Blythburgh (TM 452 756) is closed until August 2022 so stay on the Slow Ways path along the south bank which is now open...

It’s a lovely walk but two problems - the section along the busy Lowestoft Road is narrow and dangerous and not suitable for walking and the section of footpath that follows that (into Benacre) is closed....

Starting in historic Southwold; boats at Southwold Harbour; views over Bulcamp marshes; woods at Dead Man's Covert and Walberswick Nature reserve; Blythburgh's "cathedral of the marshes" and railway relics (being excavated in May 2021); grazing cattle and sheep by the river; old maltings and arts centre (The Cut) at Halesworth. Pubs advertising food (as at May 2021): Southwold, Southwold Harbour, Blythburgh, Blyford, Wenhaston and Halesworth. Going East from Blythburgh the route suggests using the South bank of the river but there is a sign saying no through route....
