Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Colin of Blythburgh
26 Mar 2022Walk undertaken by two Blythburgh residents which is the mid-point for the route and from where there is a infrequent 99A bus service covering the route (excl Sundays). Food and accommodation is available at The White Hart.
An easy and attractive walk but be aware that parts can become very muddy and subject to flooding after prolonged periods of heavy rain, sometimes exacerbated by high tides. Particular caution may be necessary between Mells (TM 405 768) and Blythburgh (TM 452 753). The field behind the Harbour Inn as you approach Southwold (TM 496 756) is also prone to flooding and is sometimes occupied by cattle - York Road can be used as an alternative route into the town.
Other points to note are:
For much of the walk you can follow the 'East Suffolk Line Walks' markers.
After passing under the railway on Halesworth's Millennium Green keep straight - do not follow the tarmac path going right.
The footpath on the north bank of the River Blyth approaching Blythburgh (TM 452 756) is closed until August 2022 so stay on the Slow Ways path along the south bank which is now open.
Take care on the short stretch of the Blythburgh to Walberswick Road (TM 478 748 to TM 481 748).

01 Jun 2021The route follows the tidal river Blyth. Hugely varied scenery with rich birdlife. Starting in historic Southwold; boats at Southwold Harbour; views over Bulcamp marshes; woods at Dead Man's Covert and Walberswick Nature reserve; Blythburgh's "cathedral of the marshes" and railway relics (being excavated in May 2021); grazing cattle and sheep by the river; old maltings and arts centre (The Cut) at Halesworth.
Pubs advertising food (as at May 2021): Southwold, Southwold Harbour, Blythburgh, Blyford, Wenhaston and Halesworth.
Minor challenges:
Warnings of "flying golf balls" at Southwold golf course (TM 502 758).
Wet but passable from there to TM 498 756.
Warnings of "basking" adders on Walberswick Common between TM 489 754 and TM 485 751. A passer-by reported that her dog had been bitten.
Unavoidable short stretch of fast single track road with narrow verges between TM 480 748 and 472 748.
Going East from Blythburgh the route suggests using the South bank of the river but there is a sign saying no through route. Instread you can use the public footpath on the North bank (accessed immediately N of the bridge).
Stile at TM 414 770.
Fallen tree to climb over at TM 413 769.
In May 2021, long sections of the path were overgrown (including with nettles) but the track was always visible and passable.
