Help connect Oundle

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Oundle’s Slow Ways.

In several places I had to cross ploughed fields where the path line was yet to be restored, and the section west of Oundle golf course could do with more walkers and better waymarking - in particular the right turn east of Bearshank Wood could very easily be missed as there is no footpath sign or waymark here. The path from the new road east of Willow Lane is not signposted, but there is only one place between the houses where it can be, and on further investigation you will see a small gate on the left before the private sign on the larger gate into the field. Note that I have plotted the actual waymarked and cut lines on the path to Brigstock, and in places this takes us quite some distance off the right of way line, notably in the wood above Harper's Brook. Approaching Brigstock, there is a choice of the more direct right of way line (which crosses close to the square of a cricket field) or the path the local dog walkers seem to prefer which stays by the brook....

This is not a bad route, but for me the GPX plotting is lazy and confusing at times, so I have submitted a more accurate version as CorOun three, and posted a detailed review with pictures there....

Slightly longer than the other routes from Stanford on Avon onwards, but well worth the effort for the combination of rural - including parts of the Nene Way - industrial and city walking....

The route through Bearshank Wood is also not particularly clear....

You cross the A605 3 times, the one nearest Peterborough is the worst for seeing traffic and its wide, the other 2 were fine. There are steps at Oundle to cross the river and get into Ashton, no stiles but a few narrow swing gates. Bridge is missing along the Nene in Peterborough so there is a small detour via the Boathouse...

There are plenty of places to stop for a break and it is ideal for walkers who like a route a bit longer and more of a challenge....

It would definitely by easier to either take route two, staying west of the A605, or route three, crossing the A605 at Thrapston and back again at Barnwell....
