Unfortunately, within half a kilometre of setting off, I found the way blocked by a high fence and locked gate (see photographs). I managed to find a work-around quite easily and have incorporated this into an alternative route (Strmil two)....

The cut through between the cycle track and the short section of the Forth and Clyde Canal at Kirkintilloch was slightly fiddly, but there were no stiles or steps, and while I can’t speak for wheelchair users, I’d be happy to do this route pushing a baby buggy! Some time after it was built, the railway line was inserted vertically between the canal and the river...

It is an extremely straightforward route, following first the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath, then a short section of the Thomas Muir trail and finally (after the only significant road crossing required) the footpath/cycleway along the bed of the old Campsie Line railway track....
