Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 Jun 2023 (edited 23 Jun 2023)I walked from Milton of Campsie on a hot sunny day, and the shade from the trees along the tarmacked cycletrack (which forms the bulk of the route) was very welcome. There were lots of walkers and cyclists on this well-kept route. I could hear buzzards, and there were gaps where you could nip down to visit the river that the path follows. There were also glimpses back to the Campsie Fells.
At the Milton end there was information about this former railway line, a cute tunnel, and a wooden snail for us Slow Wayers! (There was also a slope alternative to the steps down to the former station.)
The cut through between the cycle track and the short section of the Forth and Clyde Canal at Kirkintilloch was slightly fiddly, but there were no stiles or steps, and while I can’t speak for wheelchair users, I’d be happy to do this route pushing a baby buggy. Lovely route!
There is an interesting aqueduct at Kirkintilloch, over the Luggie Water. Some time after it was built, the railway line was inserted vertically between the canal and the river! Details here - https://www.trailsandtales.org/trails/heritage/aqueduct.

27 Mar 2023Review of Slow Ways route Milkir one (Milton of Campsie to Kirkintilloch)
I walked this route in reverse (i.e. from Kirkintilloch to Milton of Campsie) on an afternoon in March 2023. It is an extremely straightforward route, following first the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath, then a short section of the Thomas Muir trail and finally (after the only significant road crossing required) the footpath/cycleway along the bed of the old Campsie Line railway track. The route is accurate and attractive, and presents the walker/cyclist with no significant challenges beyond a slight incline leading down from the canal to the railway bed below (with nearby alternatives if required). A pleasure to walk.

27 Mar 2022A flat, tarmaced route close to the river and traffic free. Ramp access at both ends. Some tree roots have protruded near Kirkintilloch. It is on an old railway line and part of a route from Coatbridge to Fort William.
