A good Leicestershire country walk, two country parks and a bit of canal. A direct field walk is available from Sutton Cheney to Harper’s Hill but that would miss the option for a cafe stop half way. A short pavement walk takes us to the popular Country Park. The road walk along Ambion Lane has a pavement which ends where we take the bridleway. The path to Sutton Wharf is well walked and before flood damage, seen on my earlier visit, it had offered a good surface....

There is also a possibility of cutting out more of the problem areas by taking a more southerly route east of Sibson, but we have not tested that and it would substantially increase the amount of road walking. For a more detailed review with pictures see AthMar one....

There are lots of stiles on this route, particularly in the section between Gibson and Ratcliffe Culey and they aren't in great shape. There are some great views on this route, particularly towards the Warwickshire hills....

Passing the site of the Battle of Bosworth Field (including visitor centre) gives the route a certain X factor....

Walk this routeBy the time we reached Sibson Lane east of Ratcliffe Culey we decided to opt for a slightly shorter route along the road to the village rather than yet another field path of uncertain quality, and this will form part of a new route that should be easier to follow. From the meeting point in the square at Bosworth, we head west along pavements and through a housing area estate to York Close, where a well trodden field path takes us to a lane which we follow over the Bosworth heritage railway. We turn right beyond the pub and follow the path through the churchyard and over a few more overgrown stiles to reach Atherstone Road, which has no pavement but seemed quiet enough to be safe....

A sound and fairly direct route, but not quite 5* because the field path north of Hinckley is little used and some of its stiles are a little awkward. We pass the cafe at Sutton Wharf (I think the canalside path is preferable to the access road behind the cafe), and follow the path through a wood to reach the Bosworth battlefield visitor centre, where we turn right and follow field edges out to Ambion Lane, which has a pavement, as do the roads through Sutton Cheney....

Hugh Hudson added Marhin three, a new walk from Market Bosworth to Hinckley
Walk this routeMostly good, but I am going to create a new version to fix the two issues Ken mentioned (the incorrect plot on the edge of Hinckley and passing through Sutton Verney rather than skirting it). I will post a detailed review with pictures on the new route....

The first cross field path, with sheep was a delight being the former parkland. The muddy bit comes next to enter a field that is rather rutted compared with the previous easy surface of the parkland. The next path is well used while the next is ignored so I followed the locals around the well walked field edge. To my relief the wide path between the trees is mown. Care is needed as the path swaps from one side of the field boundary to enter the edge of Browns Wood. After passing under the busy road the route is initially along a track but leaves onto a parallel path through fields before a short section of road walk into Markfield passing an inn and ending close to the Co-op and bus stop....

Possible refreshments at Stapleton and Sutton Cheney but only inns so check opening times. Seats in Sutton Cheney church yard and the recreation ground at Stapleton. Crossing a minor road our path is along a track making it easier going. The exit path started well but again I seen arrived at the extent of local use and struggled with an overgrown crossing with brambles across the path and a ditch board hidden but a hazard if I missed my footing....

Ken added Marear two, a new walk from Market Bosworth to Earl Shilton
Walk this routeThere are places where the available path may be off line and strays from the plot or the plot does not follow what’s on the OS map. Here we encounter a large ploughed field and no sign of a path. The path enters a private garden which may be off putting in the opposite direction although a sign offers direction and assurance. Another large field but the path was evident and clear if a little off line. Crossing a minor road we enter another large field with undefined path so follow the plot to locate a short yellow post then continue to a humped bridge over the Ashby canal. As we approach journeys end the path is well walked so even off line it’s easy to follow....

Ken added Polmar two, a new walk from Polesworth to Market Bosworth
Walk this routeThe path had been made available across the cropped field and the increased elevation offered good views of the village and countryside. Crossing a road a gate leads onto the next path through the edge of a large garden and our path is used to dispose of the vast amount of grass cuttings. Crossing a private track the path should continue across paddocks but it has been illegally fenced along the field edge by the road so offers no short cut and is badly overgrown, I abandoned this and used the pavement which safely links Polesworth to Warton. Here we encounter a large ploughed field and no sign of a path. The path enters a private garden which may be off putting in the opposite direction although a sign offers direction and assurance. As the track turns our path enters and crosses a cropped field but locals walk around the edge so there is no path along the plotted route as we enter Sheepy Magna at the church. Crossing a minor road we enter another large field with undefined path so follow the plot to locate a short yellow post then continue to a humped bridge over the Ashby canal....

This route uses three promoted routes, Leicestershire Round, Ivanhoe Way (very briefly) and the Ashby Canal Path all are waymarked. The Ashby Canal Association base at what was the end of navigation, offers drinks and advice. I rejoined the canal line at the new head of navigation but access by boat is also closed at present. After Ilott Wharf follow the signs along the diversion route not the right of way which follows the abandoned canal line....

Ken added Meamar two, a new walk from Measham to Market Bosworth
Walk this routeThe busy road section was fine, not a walking first choice but the verges were wide and mown and this is the recognised route for the Ivanhoe Way so in the absence of an alternative direct route I’m happy not to fail it. At Snarestone the route misses the canal which is hidden in a tunnel under the village. The section of open road was almost traffic free but then the short link to the canal let the route down, being very wet just before the canal bridge. Shackerstone is about half way and has an inn but if you don’t need it or a seat in the churchyard stay on the canal path to the next bridge....

A short pavement walk takes us to the popular Country Park. The road walk along Ambion Lane has a pavement which ends where we take the bridleway. The path to Sutton Wharf is well walked and before flood damage, seen on my visit, it had offered a good surface. Crossing the bridge the path remains signed for ‘The Round’ a walk devised by members of the Leicestershire Footpath Association to mark their centenary back in 1987....

Quite a lot of stiles, especially in the western half. Sections of it very muddy in winter. Pretty flat generally....

Pleasant walk for the majority of the route with a few exceptions. Near the start of the route as the walk heads towards Gallows Lane/Measham Road, the route directly behind the industrial estate could not be found so we had to instead cut across the field (path visible on map) to get to Gallows Lane and then onto Measham Road. It was a shame that we had to miss out the Ashby-de-la-zouch canal but the path was too overgrown to walk through with shorts on!...

Hugh Hudson added Marhin two, a new walk from Market Bosworth to Hinckley
Walk this routeThe route strikes out from the market place between the co-op and the imposing former bank. The path continues to Carlton where we leave 'The Round' and take the village street but veer off to avoid passing The Gate Hangs Well. The farm track from here is inviting but not the path which is again across the field to meet the road for a brief walk along the verge, do not cross before the road junction. We meet The Round again here but that heads east and we take a path northwards towards the hamlet of Belcher's Bar....
Ken
A mix of headland and cross field paths over cropped fields. Countryside starts along the track to Lockey Farm Boarding Kennels, the recorded path cuts across one field but there was no sign of use or reinstatement so I stayed on the track. Turning by the closed gates to the kennels we are still along the field headland but even after a dry January the ground was still soft here and again later in the walk there were muddy patches. Crossing a minor road the field edge is some distance so it's across the middle but again well walked, unless you are the first visitor after cultivation....
Ken
I would suggest taking the footpath from Sutton Cheney, south, and then rejoining the route along the much quieter Dadlington to Stapleton road - I will endeavour to check this route in the near future before finalising the proposed new route....

Generally a good route with the exception of the section on Measham Road between Measham and Snarestone....
