19 Feb 2023 Winter

This is Leicestershire so the route is well signed, mostly gates with new ones being installed as I passed. Part is easy walking but other paths are across ploughed fields, could also be cattle. Just misses the inn at Carlton and any inns that were at Nailstone have now closed. At six miles the lack of services in the middle should not be an issue, an enjoyable walk.

The route strikes out from the market place between the co-op and the imposing former bank. The latter showing the importance of Market Bosworth in days gone by while the diminutive co-op offers a view on its status today. Our destination is a complete contrast. A public loo is hidden down the lane at the start of the walk which here is part of the Leicestershire Round.

The neatly mown humps and hollows through which the path passes gives the appearance of a golf course but no greens, flags or players to be seen. The path continues to Carlton where we leave 'The Round' and take the village street but veer off to avoid passing The Gate Hangs Well.

A direct crossing of the road leads onto a lesser used field path but the plot and yellow topped posts help, even if the going is more difficult over uneven ground. New kissing gates were being installed around here but beware - the waymark post had been replaced the wrong way around. The spire of Nailstone church later provides guidance across a large field towards a large modern farm shed beside which is a squat waymark post.

The farm track from here is inviting but not the path which is again across the field to meet the road for a brief walk along the verge, do not cross before the road junction. Press reports offer a reopening of The Bulls Head here but no sign of renovations in February 2023. We meet The Round again here but that heads east and we take a path northwards towards the hamlet of Belcher's Bar.

From here our path shows more evidence of footfall. Approaching the edge of Ibstock it was rather soft going even after a very dry month. The main street offers a cafe or was it two, an old fashioned hardware shop and a real classic The Palace. All this made me think the meeting place was in the wrong place but the Slow Way end does have a modern precinct of shops and a bus shelter.

Fantastic walk. At Carlton- the footpath was fortuitously diverted to avoid a field which may have previously contained livestock and so were led straight to The Gate Hangs Well pub for a quick refreshment stop (good food/snacks and beer here).
Fields were boggy but was to be expected.
Route was east to follow- we did this in reverse from Ibstock to Market Bosworth. I’ve created another route as we had around another 2 miles to this route starting point at Ibstock.
Easy to follow and quiet footpaths.
Very good for dogs and we saw a variety of wildlife including alpacas, llamas, sheep and horses.
