The route out of Earl Shilton is neither EarDes one nor what I was forced to walk after abandoning a path that was so badly overgrown I couldn't follow it - what I did was to continue on the better used path up to Shilton Road, and use the road to get back to the original route, but this road walk was unpleasant and had one dangerous blind bend, so I changed the design to use a route that looks better. From Earl Shilton, we use a mixture of pavements and alleyway paths to reach Leicester Road, which has a pavement which we follow out to the junction with Shilton Road then take the field path straight on....

Walk this routeSadly one of the paths, just west of Shilton Road is currently impenetrable - having fought my way through nettles and bramble shoots to enter a rough ungrazed pasture, I couldn't spot any gaps in the thick hedge on the far side or any footpath marker posts, and eventually I retreated to look for an alternative route - at this point I followed the better trodden track out to Shilton Road and used the road to get back on track....

From the meeting point in Hinckley we head north up Regent Street, then right onto Stockwell Head, which we remain on after the main road turns left, heading up quite a steep hill, then straight on on Wood Street, then taking an alleyway left (Church Walk) back to the main road. We turn right and then more or less straight on to the edge of Hinckley, taking a tarmac path between fences where Bradgate Road heads off to the left....

Possible refreshments at Stapleton and Sutton Cheney but only inns so check opening times. Seats in Sutton Cheney church yard and the recreation ground at Stapleton. Crossing a minor road our path is along a track making it easier going. The exit path started well but again I seen arrived at the extent of local use and struggled with an overgrown crossing with brambles across the path and a ditch board hidden but a hazard if I missed my footing....

Walk this routeA mix of pasture and cropped fields some large but as always in Leicestershire gates and yellow topped posts make the going easy. Crossing a road we enter wide open space but the yellow topped posts were visible to show me the way and gates made boundary crossing simple, unlike the start where there were stiles. Under the power cables then a bridge leads into a pleasant strip of pasture after those large cropped fields. A pleasant recreation ground might offer a seat if you plan to continue beyond Desford and a shop will provide any needs....

Walk this routeThe left option has no steps or ramp and is a drop down to the road. Seemingly minor, but if not corrected and the correct option not made more obvious, future walkers will ask why no one mentioned it before!...

As you leave the village, you follow a the main road which has no pavement, but the road is straight and the verge is wide. Having crossed a bridge over the A47 you then leave Thurlaston Lane to walk along Earl Shilton Road, a quiet lane with no pavement but with great sight lines and is relaxing enough to able to enjoy the open countryside....

You're inexplicably required to leave the road you're on (through a building!) and then follow an alleyway back on to the road you started on....

A well marked combination of paths across a golf course, through a wood and then across a common deliver you to a very straight combination of paths and roads to the centre of Earl Shilton....

As the route continues it passes through, and around the edge of, more fields, before hitting a residential road that leads all the way to Desford where there is a cafe and pub, very close to the routes end....

I started this SlowWays path in Hinckley town centre, where there are plenty of shops, cafes and amenities....

The route begins in the town centre, passes through a few residential streets before taking a jitty down the side of a school college and out onto Hinckley golf course....

If it's hot, you can walk through the woods; the lane will take you down to the car park where there is a great cafe; or cross the open meadows....
