Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Jan 2024A mix of pasture and cropped fields some large but as always in Leicestershire gates and yellow topped posts make the going easy. Some stiles and perhaps cattle but horses in paddocks not on the path.
From Earl Shilton it’s narrow alleyways to start then estate roads which lead to a pub which suggested to me there was a plan for this to be the centre of a community not located on the edge. A wide green track passes allotments before heading off into open fields. The early part of this exit may not be the best on offer.
Crossing a road we enter wide open space but the yellow topped posts were visible to show me the way and gates made boundary crossing simple, unlike the start where there were stiles. Under the power cables then a bridge leads into a pleasant strip of pasture after those large cropped fields. There are two paths leading to Peckleton, our plot uses the bridleway which was a good surface even with such wet ground. As we climb there are views back to Earl Shilton and then the spire of Peckleton church comes into view.
We cross between horse paddocks on a fenced route and drop down to the lane with a nice view of the church. The lane becomes a bit rough the surface having been washed away by a flood. No apparent services here but then it’s not a long walk. The final section starts with pasture and evidence of badger digging close to the path. We then enter a huge ploughed field but the path is well walked and a lone bush and drunken waymark post also offer guidance.
The path meets a lane, unmade at this point, which was once a road between Desford and Kirkby Mallory. Meeting houses the lane is surfaced and a pavement is provided. A pleasant recreation ground might offer a seat if you plan to continue beyond Desford and a shop will provide any needs. Buses offer a ride to Leicester but only every hour and not late into the evening. The meeting place is adequate for this link and there is a seat.
South of Desford but out of sight is a massive site where Caterpillar machinery is made, this had been an airfield first used in 1916. The village retains many attractive buildings in the centre around the church.

06 Aug 2022I walked this route in both directions. My outward bound leg started in Earl Shilton, where there are a couple of pubs, a cafe, a small supermarket, all close to the starting point.. The route is easy enough to navigate with plenty of finger poster and yellow-topped markers pointing the way to Desford.
The route begins near Earl Shilton war memorial and for a short distance snakes its way through a residential area, before entering fields. The second field I encountered had sheep in, and strangely one short patch was boggy and waterlogged, despite it being August and looking dry, this might be worse in the winter months.
After crossing Shilton Road the route passes through a number of fields, through most the path is clearly defined. The route then reaches Peckleton were there is a church, this is slight past the route's half-way point.
As the route continues it passes through, and around the edge of, more fields, before hitting a residential road that leads all the way to Desford where there is a cafe and pub, very close to the routes end.
A good SlowWays route between, and connecting, these two Leicestershire villages.
