Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Latest Updates
There is also a possibility of cutting out more of the problem areas by taking a more southerly route east of Sibson, but we have not tested that and it would substantially increase the amount of road walking. For a more detailed review with pictures see AthMar one....

There are lots of stiles on this route, particularly in the section between Gibson and Ratcliffe Culey and they aren't in great shape. There are some great views on this route, particularly towards the Warwickshire hills....

David Sanderson added Athmar two, a new walk from Atherstone to Market Bosworth
Walk this routeBy the time we reached Sibson Lane east of Ratcliffe Culey we decided to opt for a slightly shorter route along the road to the village rather than yet another field path of uncertain quality, and this will form part of a new route that should be easier to follow. From the meeting point in the square at Bosworth, we head west along pavements and through a housing area estate to York Close, where a well trodden field path takes us to a lane which we follow over the Bosworth heritage railway. We turn right beyond the pub and follow the path through the churchyard and over a few more overgrown stiles to reach Atherstone Road, which has no pavement but seemed quiet enough to be safe....

Only required interpretation crossing a couple of golf courses where they haven't marked the right of way. Mainly offroad, but where it isn't there is mostly pavement or it's along a quiet lane. Steps and stiles so not great for wheels...
David Sanderson
Another footpath leads us back over the golf course and continues through fields to Barley Close Lane, where we turn right, then left on Ridge Lane which has a pavement. Our path goes through an alleyway just before the pub, then goes left between fields and gardens, then right along a field edge into another golf course....

We pioneered this route from Atherstone to New Arley, but decided to make a few minor changes which I have uploaded as NEWATH two. I will write a more detailed review with pictures there....

Walk this routeWe need to cross at some point before the railway station, where we follow the side road under the railway then turn right down onto the canal towpath. We turn right onto Bridge Street (or take the path through the park over the footbridges) and right again onto High Street....

Leaving the meeting point in Nuneaton, we go a short distance west along Queens Road, then right onto Harefield Street and left onto Newdegate Street. We follow Coleshill Street, crossing South Street with care (or using the zebra crossing further left) then past the post office to Long Street, where we cross, turn left then right up Market Street to reach the Atherstone meeting point in the Market Place....

A lovely wander along the canal - the other reviews have covered the detail I think! Direct train between the two places so you can return to your car easily at the other end!...

A lovely SlowWays route which largely follows the Coventry Canal. Urban walking at both ends is very short and simple, and there are pubs, cafes, convenience shops and takeaways with plenty of opportunity for refreshments at the beginning or end of the route. I walked the route in August and the path was completely dry, however in the winter the towpath may become muddy....

Nice route with a variety of terrains ranging from arable fields, woodland areas, some quiet roads and a short section of busier road with footpath beside....

Once on the Coventry Canal it's a straight, and easy to navigate, route towards Atherstone....

Walk this routeThe route to the canal is by pavement along some main roads, there are plenty of crossings and it's not long before you are on the Coventry Canal. The route from canal to meeting point is direct but safe and Atherstone has its own array of stops and shops for you to peruse....
David Sanderson
Polesworth and Atherstone are both lovely towns, and all the middle of the walk is along the canal. I was really pleased with the countryside views afforded from the canal, though, and so I thought this route was particularly picturesque and pleasant for walking!...

The short section alongside the A5 needs care if you have children but once on the diverted footpath along the disused railway it's safe. The road could provide a direct route to Wood End but it had a fair bit of traffic, the path across the field avoids this and has the benefit of a good view southwards before meeting the pavement for a safe walk finish....

Having crossed the River Anker via the old bridge, there is a short section of pavement to walk before joining the towpath of the Coventry Canal. The surroundings have some variety in the short distance with North Warwickshire countryside around the River Anker and dotted villages....
David Sanderson
This may be a nice route which I didn't walk but is it a Slow Way? I think not. Eight miles when it could be three miles less....

Beyond the edge of Atherstone there is a short section along the pavement of the A5, but you soon leave to join the wooded footpath and its views towards Merevale. There is a short section of lane walking along "Waste Lane" up Waste Hill but the lane is open and there are spaces to move to the side, I felt safe throughout. There is another short section of lane walking beyond it, where some caution is needed but you seen take a footpath to the left which crosses a field to Wood End....
