Latest Updates

There has been building work in and around both Arlesey and Lower Stondon and as a result some the paths are slightly altered to the GPX map, but this may be a temporary reroute, regardless the mapped version is currently unavailable but there is a clear alternative that brings you out at the same place so no real issues....

Letchworth is a lovely town and there's a reason it's called a Letchworth Garden City, with lovely planting, wide pavements and verges. Walking in either direction you're quickly out of town and onto country paths and across fields...

This is a nice rural walk with very little in the way of roads to worry about....

At Lower Stondon, the worst of these accuracy issues involves what I can only assume is an old footpath that has been built upon and now diverted further down Meadowsweet road....

Please follow Flilow two - this route is poorly drawn in sections....

*Note: this route was walked in two parts from either end. A nice reasonably straightforward route, with only small amounts of walking in road in the midde section....

Agree with previous reviewers, a lovely enjoyable walk across open farmland, woods and villages. Very few roads. Not suitable for wheels due to narrow, muddy, uneven parts....

I have uploaded an alternative walkable route, but it is also not good as I don't know this area, I hope a local person can upload a definitive walkable path. Lower Stondon is small but the Local Store has a large selection of beers, English, Scottish, Belgium, Dutch, real, craft and tins....

Living in Ickleford I often walk to Hitchin station and the route here is what I would call "the scenic route" as it follows the river through some lovely off road parks. I would not choose to walk to station that way if in a hurry and not in winter, the way following roads and pavements along Bury Mead Road or Strathmore road to meet the route at Grove Road, would be easier and faster, better for pushchairs etc....

There is a slightly longer route via fishing pond along a track to the farm on edge of meppershall, to avoid that bit which we did on way back....

On leaving Lower Stondon there is no pavement after All Saints church but the road is pretty quiet. The photos are - the footpath leaving the road outside Lower Stondon, footpaths in the countryside, the underpass leading to Shefford...

A nice mix of walking through villages and across open fields. Care is needed on the roads where there is no pavement as there are several bends....

You can just turn right at the end of the Rec onto Grove Road to go under the bridge on the pavement or alternatively there is a small track along the river to the right of the basketball court. I attach 2 photos of the paths and one of a small bridge between Ickleford and Lower Stondon and one of the track by the river between Grove Road and Ickleford....

The route within Hitchin and just north of the town avoids too much pavement walking, instead going through a park, along a short riverside path and through a nature reserve....

There's a section between Ickleford & Letchworth going past Jerry's Hole that can get really boggy to the point of being almost impassible during a wet winter. There's also a footbridge over the railway at Cadwell Crossing that might be tough if you've got movement issues or have a child in a pushchair....

Walk this route

(1) A mile and a half on pavement through Lower Stondon and Henlow Camp, alongside a reasonably busy road. (2) An odd turn south along Arlesey High Street and alongside the recreation ground - this detour could be cut out of the current route by walking along the lane north of the nursery. To avoid this, I’d suggest a detour through the nature reserves west of the railway, through Arlesey station, along Stotfold Road (where there is a pavement alongside a cycleway) and through Etonbury Wood - however, this would add nearly 2 miles to the current route....

The section approaching Arlesey goes across a nice nature reserve in water meadows and you can get some really nice views looking back over it from the foot bridge over the railway....
