Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I have mixed opinions about this route! It is reasonably direct and it passes through some idyllic countryside but I am not so keen on a couple of path choices and a busy road crossing.

Negatives:
(1) A mile and a half on pavement through Lower Stondon and Henlow Camp, alongside a reasonably busy road. Admittedly, there is not much option for alternative routes here.
(2) An odd turn south along Arlesey High Street and alongside the recreation ground - this detour could be cut out of the current route by walking along the lane north of the nursery.
(3) A dark and narrow alley behind houses between Arlesey recreation ground and Hillary Rise. Walking through the suburbs between the High Street and Hillary Rise is actually a little shorter.
(4) Crossing the busy A507 between Arlesey and Stotfold, where no provision has been made for pedestrians. You may wait some time here for a safe moment to cross. To avoid this, I’d suggest a detour through the nature reserves west of the railway, through Arlesey station, along Stotfold Road (where there is a pavement alongside a cycleway) and through Etonbury Wood - however, this would add nearly 2 miles to the current route.

Positives:
(1) Wide, open views between Henlow Camp and Arlesey on flat paths with vast fields on each side.
(2) Peaceful walking through Arlesey Common by the River Hiz
(3) Several food & drink options on the route in Henlow Camp and in Stotfold, public loo in Stotfold.

Giving this a lower rating purely because of the amount of road walking there is. At least the first third of the route is on a pavement beside pretty busy roads and going through Henlow Airbase, so not the pretiest place to be walking! It's a great releif to get onto footpaths when you leave that area. The section approaching Arlesey goes across a nice nature reserve in water meadows and you can get some really nice views looking back over it from the foot bridge over the railway.
