Latest Updates

A direct, but not particularly interesting, route along reasonable footpaths and pavements. Much of the route passes through an industrial area. Both towns are worth visiting but check the transport situation, particularly at the weekend, where you can wait up to 2 hours for a bus!...

Walk this route

There is one short section (<50m) on road in Graveley village. There is a narrow pavement on the opposite side of Julians Road railway bridge (see photo), but the pavement on the near side is satisfactory...

Finding your way through the first footpaths on the outskirts of Stevenage is a little bewildering, but modern Stevenage is endowed with wide pedestrian/cycleways and pleasing underpasses separating people from traffic....

On passing through the small wooded area at Radwell by the River Ivel you can go straight on across the meadow and then take a right to Norton Bury, crossing the Norton Road to the churchyard and then walk along the pavement to Norton Common....

A pleasant and easy to follow route mainly avoiding the busy A505 Cambridge Road....

Black Squirrel

Walk this route

The route goes through the urban landscape of the industrial area of Letchworth Garden City, which can be busy at times, before crossing the A1(M) via a foot bridge and terminating in the centre of the pretty town of Baldock, some distance from the bus stops in High Street and the railway station in Station Road....

Black Squirrel

Walk this route

The exception is when crossing West Avenue/Pepys Way to get to the park in Baldock; on one side of the street, there is an insufficent dropped kerb that would probably be difficult for wheelchairs, although Hopewell Road and Pepys Way might provide a sufficient alternative route....

Walk this route

In Stevenage there is a little more walking on residential streets but the route also goes along one or two old footpaths and uses the town’s cycle path network to keep away from main roads as much as possible. At the edge of Stevenage, walking alongside the A602 is unpleasant with traffic fumes and crossing the Graveley Road at the A1(M) junction is difficult. A detour is recommended using the path between Wymondley Road and the village green, by The Fox pub2...

A pleasant and direct walk between Hitchin and Letchworth. There were some nice views, particularly in the middle of the walk. The route felt safe and was enjoyable to walk....

There is a mini supermarket on Hitchin station approaches, and pubs on route. The footpath under the railway bridge at Hitchin is on the opposite side of the road to the station and it is narrow (less than 1 metre)....

There's a section between Ickleford & Letchworth going past Jerry's Hole that can get really boggy to the point of being almost impassible during a wet winter. There's also a footbridge over the railway at Cadwell Crossing that might be tough if you've got movement issues or have a child in a pushchair....

To exit Stotfold I would suggest a minor diversion using a pavement / cycleway under the A507 and a short footpath linking to a point on the bridleway which leads to Radwell - these alternative paths are visible on OpenStreetMap....

Walk this route

There's a really easy dogleg where you can follow the pavement right to go under an underpass and pick up the route on the other side though (I've tried to add a GPX file with that alternate route but the site keeps telling me the start and end points have moved!). Other than that, this is a pretty pleasant walk through water meadows and the fields and churchyard of Norton. A bit of road walking in Stotfold and once you are in to Letchworth but the route takes you through Norton Common in the centre of the town which is well worth exploring if you've never been there before....
