Help connect Leith
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Leith’s Slow Ways.

At the end of the Links, the route takes a short climb onto the Restalrig Railway path - as the name implies, a path created from a defunct railway - and passes Seafield cemetery. As the main path curves right, the route follows a narrow muddy path down to Seafield Street. The route crosses Seafield Road and follows another path between the railway and some industrial units. The route leaves Seafield Road and drops down to a walkway along the river front. As it enters Musselburgh, the route leaves the main road, passes the pretty Fisherrow Harbour and follows the promenade around Fisherrow Park. Overall: 3 or 4 stars, so I've gone for 4 because the segments through Leith Links, Portobello and Fisherrow Park outweigh the segments at Seafield and Joppa-Musselburgh....

After a while, the route turns left down McDonald Road, a quieter residential street, then into St Mark's Park, where a right turn takes you onto the Water of Leith walkway. Edilei Four suffers from one set of steps at Newhaven Road, which you can avoid by sticking on Edilei Two and following the Warriston Path (aka National Cycle Route 75) into Leith. I believe you can avoid all that by crossing the Water of Leith at West Bowling Green Street, turning left on the path on the East side of the river, then take Mill Lane, Sherriff Brae and Coalhill into Leith....

Nice route through Leith Links (a park, now with a cafe), past a range of independent shops, and over Calton Hill. Great alternative to Leith Walk (which is less green but also nice)....

I didn`t notice any major disruptions along the way, so the tram works and cycle route works of the earlier reviews must have finished....

I chose this slightly longer route to avoid the main roads as much as possible and it turned out to be an excellent coastal walk, taking in Leith Links, Portobello Promenade and the wide open Fishberrow Park headland in Musselburgh. Photo 6 - Looking back on Musselburgh Harbour and Arthur`s Seat...

The route through the Links and along the old railway, and the footpath running alongside the railway and sewage works, are all good, but then the route seems to plunge onto the beach, which obviously requires a low tide. Too much beachwalking and odd diversions in the route do not make this a suitable route for all, even walkers, especially reliant as it is on the tides....

At the main road, we cross, then turn along a footpath between the railway and the sewage works. At the end of the prom in Joppa, we join the main road as far as Newhailes, where we take the road closest to the estuary, passing the harbour at Fisherrow and onto the tarmac footpath that runs across the old links....

A good riverside wander, but there's quite a few steps, which would exclude some users....

And once up and over, and into the Royal Terrace Gardens (high kerbs) the route takes us down a nonexistent path down a steep grass slope to the road below....

One thing I will say: at the Leith end, just past the church and Trinity House, the route seems to go through a building that has been demolished; it's best to walk to the stairs of the flats, and follow the footpath around to the right....

I agree with the other reviwers and will upload an alternative route largely avoiding the busy roads. The Beach House cafe on Portobello promenade is recommended for coffee and cakes. Adventurous walkers who do not mind scrambling over boulders can walk all the way from Seafield to Musselburgh by the shore (at low tide - check the tide tables!)....

For a start (coming from the Musselburgh end) there appears to be a footpath between w3w tooth.with.cubes and yours.waddled.margin on the far side of the disused railway track, and then you could use Seafield Street to pick up the cycle path (either by the ageing wooden steps at w3w busy.doctor.money, or a slightly more roundabout step-free route to the south) that goes by Seafield Cemetery and on through Claremont Park, arriving into Leith via Queen Charlotte Street (though it is currently a little hampered by the tram-building works)....

Nice stroll from the Waverley station area, firstly up a bit and down a bit through the streets of the new town, before dropping down into a little park to follow a wide, obstacle-free cycle path along a green corridor (trees, allotments, waterside) to Leith....

Slow Ways Cristie added Edilei four, a new walk from Edinburgh to Leith
Walk this routeI deviated slightly through the Dalmeny Estate (I didn't check the route properly and followed the John Muir Way instead) and again at the end to walk to go along South Queensferry High Street to access the facilities there. A great route if you fancy a longish walk that's not too challenging and also a practical way to get from Leith to South Queensferry (in daylight)....
Kiki
The addition of Calton hill and London Street gardens add elevation/descent and lower path quality that probably isn't worth it for the lower traffic route. A more direct route along Leith walk would have traffic levels that are higher, but also cut of 1km (25% reduction). A much more scenic and traffic free route would connect with the cycle path at Scotland street or Canonmills and adds only 250m....

If I wanted to get from Edinburgh to Leith I would probably just go directly along Leith Walk, although this provides a reasonable alternative using less busy roads. I would cut out the section going through London Road Gardens and around the side of Calton Hill though. Coming up from Leith, that felt like an unnecessarily steep slog just to come down again the other side of Calton Hill, when sticking to the main roads would have been a lot less strenuous!...
Kiki
For ‘wheelers’, be aware the Musselburgh end of the route goes over the Old Bridge with steep steps at either side - a slight adjustment to go over the New Bridge and along Bridge Street (rather than Market Street) would avoid this....
Kiki
A great walk mainly along tarmac paths including the costal walk along the shore leading up to Crammond. Be aware that after this (along the eastern side of the river Almond) the path becomes rough and includes a set of steep steps. These can be avoided if you follow Whitehouse Road....
