Description
The most direct option. Advantages: Quickest, stairway-free, and when going Leith => Edinburgh, is very gently uphill most of way, and avoids steep uphill sections. Disadvantages: a lot of traffic/busy. Note Leith Walk is a bit of a mess at the moment with the tram works, but once completed in 2023 (?), Leith Walk should have less traffic, and improved pavements (+ dedicated cycle lanes). Horses for courses really

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Sep 2023September 2023. Direction: Edinburgh to Leith.
I didn`t notice any major disruptions along the way, so the tram works and cycle route works of the earlier reviews must have finished. An easy to navigate route suitable for all. There was no sign as such, but at one point I just got the feeling that I had left Edinburgh and entered Leith. Plenty to do along the way, so this could be a 3/4 hour walk or a full day walk. I took in a couple of pubs along the way to make a very pleasant afternoon.

24 May 2023A straight-forward route between Edinburgh and Leith, using pavements alone.
As routes go, it's not the most picturesque or varied, as it's mainly one long road, but it at least fits the brief. Lots of shops along the way, and transport links close to each end.
One thing I will say: at the Leith end, just past the church and Trinity House, the route seems to go through a building that has been demolished; it's best to walk to the stairs of the flats, and follow the footpath around to the right.
That said, a good functional route and accessible for all.

29 Dec 2022Super direct route. Lots of nice shops, cafes, pubs along the way. Will be much nicer when trams are finished. Recommend walking on left side of road down from Edinburgh to Leith.

27 Dec 2022A gentle up (or down!) hill route following the main road between Edinburgh and Leith. Currently, there is major tram work so it's quite a noisy mess (due for completion spring 2023), however this is an easy, direct route passing many interesting shops, cafes, bars and restaurants along the way. There is a bike lane running parallel to the footpath which has a small step to separate the two - it's not particularly noticeable, until you've turned your ankle on it, so just be vigilant! Also, the bike lane is not complete, so cyclists do ride on the pavement currently - most are courteous, just be aware. There's a lovely little free library en route (rhs as you're going towards Leith) and next to it, the Leith Police Box has an independent artist/craftsperson/eatery take over daily - changing all the time, so well worth a look at.
