Description

An alternative to Edilei one. More of a 'hidden Edinburgh' option, taking in some of the extensive traffic-free converted old railway lines, plus Water of Leith walkway. Advantages: greener, quieter, stairway-free. Disadvantages: slightly longer, fewer views of the city. If going from Leith to Waverley, the stretch from King George V Park to St Andrew Square is consistently (and pretty steeply) uphill, and might not be suitable for everyone

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A good urban route with enough green areas for interest and variation.

Walked in reverse. From the centre of Leith, a pleasant walk alongside the river before joining the old railway walk. Mostly tarmac with some earth sections.

Through a park and past a cemetery, we then pass over a bridge before running through a tunnel into s park, before climbing uphill and meeting the roads of Edinburgh. Well-paved with good crossings, and passing the National Portrait Gallery and the Dundas memorial before arriving at Waverley.

A good route, and accessible to all, although with some uphill sections.

Review of SlowWays Route Edilei two (Edinburgh to Leith)
I reviewed this route on a sunny Sunday afternoon in August 2022. The first part of the route is along pavements as it makes its way steeply up to George Street then steeply down to George V Park. Thereafter the route follows the bed of the old Warriston Railway along a great surface accessible to everyone. A really quiet route through a busy part of Edinburgh with lovely views and lots to see.

This is a pleasant, easy to follow route that is mainly flat and accessible to ‘wheelers’. A large part uses the Warriston Path and Water of Leith Walkway and so avoids busy roads. There is a slightly steep section coming up Dublin Street (if you begin at Leith). On the whole, this is a preferable route to EdiLei One. The downside is that it is longer and less direct so may not be the best option if you want to get between Edinburgh and Leith as quickly as possible.

Walked this while staying with some friends in Edinburgh. Nice stroll from the Waverley station area, firstly up a bit and down a bit through the streets of the new town, before dropping down into a little park to follow a wide, obstacle-free cycle path along a green corridor (trees, allotments, waterside) to Leith. Easy and pleasurable. My friends tell me that the path is 'a pedestrian 'M1' locally. Definitely recommended.

Avoids the chicken shops of the direct route down the Leith Rd, and walks along the rather nice cycle route to Leith. Slight risk of high speed brutes in lycra but otherwise a rather nice stroll on the hols.
