Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Holmfirth’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
Lots of route choices available from Holme village down into Holmfirth, take away coffee from the Fleece in Holme (closed Mondays) public toilets at crowden and holme village...

Overall, the route is pretty well accessible for walkers, with only the odd short ascent....
Chris Green
There are a couple of unpleasant short bits of path, both passing behind farms, which, whilst well signposted, are rather overgrown with nettles and brambles and I wished I'd worn my long trousers! It is generally safe, and reasonably accurate (apart form the short impassable bit of path. But to be fair that could be down to my plotting on OS maps!)...

Had I been designing the route, I would have stayed in the park rather than diverting right - this would mean more steps but Cooper Lane is steep, has no pavements and is rather busier than I expected. At Binns Lane we go right a few steps and follow a signposted footpath up some very steep steps between gardens to reach Hill Lane. We follow the lane past the houses, then head straight on down Coach Road, which has a good pavement on the north side. We follow Holmfirth Road then turn right onto Huddersfield Road to the oddly situated Meltham meeting point, at a bus stop with no seats....

Here we reach a road junction and go straight on - the road is wide and reasonably quiet (much of the traffic turns right onto Annat Royd Lane for Ingbirchworth reservoir. At the T junction we turn left, then right to reach a bridletrack which takes a fairly level course round the side of Cheese Gate Nab. Where we leave the main path left, we join a steep and quite rutted narrow path, which is a watercourse lower down - this needs a little care in descent and was the roughest part of the whole walk. We cross the main road and go straight on on a little used narrow road through woodland, then go sharp right on a good path along the river. We reach Sike Lane across fields and turn left, then right onto Sandy Gate. More grass tracks take us towards the Cliff Recreation Ground - it appears that most locals go into the parkland higher up so the straight on path is becoming a little overgrown. We turn right onto Wooldale Cliff Road, then take the path left, then left again on a steep and slightly awkward narrow path down to Cliff Road....

The route starts in the centre of Holmfirth and quickly and steeply takes you out and up, through Victoria park, where it is worth turning around to look at the vista across the town (yes, it is a town, albeit small) and up via a very steep snicket with a couple of flights of steps, cutting between residential back gardens. After that its easy going, Pretty clear route, along well signposted paths and lanes, through the old part of Upperthong (very quiant) and up towards Wolfstone Heights, before heading down to Meltham via the golf course. The route finishes at the bust stop outside the Coop, but I cheated and cut off the last corner as I know the lie of the land round there, and finished in the car park behind the coop, where I met my husband who was taking me for well-earned Sunday lunch!...

Four rather than five stars because there are a couple of road sections, but they're all quite quiet and felt safe and most have nice views. There's one busy road crossing (the A628), but that's probably unavoidable and it's not too difficult a spot for it....

Even with the fixes it's not the most beautiful route in the region, but it's not too challenging and it introduced me to paths I had not explored even though I'm a local....

stevepaget added Holske two, a new walk from Holmfirth to Skelmanthorpe
Walk this routePrevious walkers probably didn't notice this, because the alternative route is more obvious if you're going Holmfirth-Skelmanthorpe and they wouldn't have thought it was important....

It's a safe route and was good underfoot when we walked it in September, The paths are varied and give great views. The miles flew by. I'd walk this again....

It's then a lovely walk across fields and tracks to Hepworth with plenty more good views and a village shop in Scholes if you need refreshments. It's then a climb almost all along footpaths up to the ridge, still with plenty of great views across the valley. The views are still good, as you are high up on a bit of a ridge, but it's hard underfoot and felt like it went on for ever....
Pete Belsey
Keeping to the route south of Newsome was a bit of a struggle, but this shouldn't cause problems as there are lots of alternative paths....

Very good route along a famous disused rail line and Pennine Wsy national trail. Superb views all along the route....
archiebald7
The path looks as if it goes up through them, but it's better (for you and for the allotment holders) if you continue on just for a little way and turn right at the end of the allotments beside a stone wall. It's then a bit of a trudge along the road into Shepley....
Pete Belsey
I'm local to the route but it used many footpaths I'd never used before....

Steep sections, varied surfaces (cobbles, tarmac, grass, mud, gravel), gates & stiles: not suitable for wheel chairs or for people with several health conditions. The route as given includes some sections that make it longer than it need be and increase ascent & descent....

From Holmfirth, you explore cute back alleys and make your way up the hill to the cliffside views over the village. The path going up Cheese Gate Nab (just after Hepworth) was the most challenging part....
