Walked this one in reverse, starting at Skelmanthorpe, which frankly is the preferable way as it less uphill and more down, which suits me! Also, walking it from the Skelmanthorpe end back down into Holmfirth afforded me some stunning vistas which I might have missed heading the other way. I really enjoyed this route. The weather was just right, which helped. There are a couple of unpleasant short bits of path, both passing behind farms, which, whilst well signposted, are rather overgrown with nettles and brambles and I wished I'd worn my long trousers! But they weren't impassable. There was however one completely impassable section, at New Mill. Fortunately there is a short alternative detour, so that wasn't such an obstacle.
I started at 10.25 and got into Holmfirth at 3pm, but I did stop for a picnic for about 20 minutes, and I do tend to faff about a lot, taking photos and looking at wildlife an so on. I saw quite a few butterflies, which have been a bit thin on the ground this year, a pair of very noisy kestrels and a pair of equally vocal (but more tuneful) buzzards as well as a chiff-chaff. The view across Holmfirth and up the valley towards Holme Moss, as I was coming down Cliff Lane back into my home town, made it for me. I would walk this route again, maybe with friends or family, but probably in Autumn/winter when the nettles and brambles wont be so thick! To be fair the two short periods of discomfort didn't spoil the walk for me, but it is worth being aware of. It is generally safe, and reasonably accurate (apart form the short impassable bit of path. But to be fair that could be down to my plotting on OS maps!).

I made this route because the previous one had an inaccessible section and a very overgrown part. Even with the fixes it's not the most beautiful route in the region, but it's not too challenging and it introduced me to paths I had not explored even though I'm a local.
