Help connect Huddersfield

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Huddersfield’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

I have not tested all of the amended sections but overall it looks easier to walk, and is definitely slightly shorter and has a little less ascent and descent. See HudBri one for a more detailed review with pictures....

From Huddersfield we head north along the pavements of John William Street and St Johns Road, then up the hill a bit, turning right down Birkby Hall Road (some of this wasted ascent could be avoided by using Blacker Road North and Norman Road). When we reach Bradford Road we almost immediately turn left up a flight of steps, then descend back to the road. We turn left onto Netheroyd Road and almost immediately take the signposted byway right (Judy Lane). The GPX plot here follows the official right of way line along the lane, but it is probably nicer to use the parallel path just inside the wood (in fact one could easily continue straight on to the junction of Fixby Road and Broomfield Road, saving a bit of effort). Although it is a dual carriageway, Fixby Road is easy to cross, with central refuges at both ends of the stretch we follow. We then turn right onto an unsignposted alleyway opposite a shop, which leads to a good well trodden field path to and across the M62 bridge....

It is an easy route with no hills, just slopes at canal locks and is about five miles....

Near Lane takes us to the path right, which goes fairly steeply downhill to meet the Meltham Greenway. Our path has stiles and starts between fences, and I missed the right turn through the second field, a mistake easily rectified using the next crossing path. After crossing a stream, we start climbing, and the path has been diverted left to avoid a farmhouse - both the OS map and OpenStreetMap now show the correct line which goes a little wider than what the GPX shows. A little path right takes us into a pasture, which we cross, then another field takes us to an old lane between stone walls, which we follow most of the way to the farm before turning right onto the rather overgrown James Lane. Beyond the third field the path has been diverted left and now goes along the north side of the wall not the south. Eventually you should get to the far side of the main road, where we turn right over the bridge then left on Lockwood Scar....

It's a safe route and was good underfoot when we walked it in September, The paths are varied and give great views. The miles flew by. I'd walk this again....

I walked this route from Huddersfield to Elland, it starts out of Huddersfield, quite urban but nice. This part is steep, overgrown and narrow, until you cross a small lane when the views get better! When walking this from Elland to Huddersfield, look out and take the right hand path when crossing the small lane, there are two paths that come out close together. Behind the houses is still a bit overgrown (look out for berries, yum!), but the golf course has a clear path across the middle and is easy going....

The walk out of Huddersfield not the most pleasant part of the route - certainly not the pleasantest part of Huddersfield. Once you reach Cowcliffe Hill the route is better and the climb out of town gives some great views of the town. There is one slight deviation round a building just before descending onto the B6114 but it is nothing major....

Route works okay…..footpath from SE126 203 to SE123 206 is not obvious on the ground and may be muddy if livestock are present in the fields. SE120 205 to SE 119 206 is a steep downhill about 200m in length on grass/mud, which may be challenging to less confident users....

Mostly great views and lovely countryside, with a bit of old urban streets and road walking that take it down from 5 to 4 stars. It's worth going along the main road (which has a pavement) to get to the quiet road into Kirkburton, with nice views of the valley. The final section into Skelmanthorpe starts with another pleasant descent through fields , then a farm lane and finally the road....

Unfortunately the route as plotted has a major problem as it passes along a lane past houses which has no right of way. (between SE1251013497 and SE1269313605) This necessitates a detour back uphill in the wrong direction, before 500m along a busy main road...
