Help connect Penistone

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Penistone’s Slow Ways.

Approaching our leaving point we cross a tall viaduct where there is no vertical link to the footpath that passes underneath. While researching the viaduct name I discovered Barnsley Council sign-boards call this Romticle Viaduct, local newspapers call it Rumtickle Viaduct and the LNER plans from the 1940s call it Romptickle Viaduct, old OS maps show Rumtickle....

This route is basicly good but fails at the tunnel. The bridleway NW-SE passes through the tunnel, the footpath N-S passes over the top. There is no link between them at the position shown....

This route takes the direct path onto the Trans Pennine Trail so stock up because there is nothing along the way. The path down started well along a fence line but gorse obstructed a direct route as shown on the map so it was a twist and turn looking for accessible gaps before locating a signed stile at the crossing track....

Hugh failed to locate the plotted path which from this direction is signed and clear but it doesn’t follow the route on OS or the Barnsley definitive map, it joins the track where there is a well used step stile following the black dash line on OS. At Long Lane to the south of Castle Dam there is a step stile opposite suggesting a path but it’s not on OS or Barnsley maps. Not only that but there is another step stile at the far end to continue a parallel path in the field, definitive map online suggests the stiles are the correct route....

We then follow Nook Lane right to a farm building, where we take the signposted path left into more pastures. At the next farm I couldn't see any evidence of the path half right so I just followed the shorter path along the farm lane (which is easier and better used - OpenStreetMap suggests that the path I missed has been diverted to leave the lane further west beyond the farm buildings). A short walk along Mortimer Road (the pavement ends just short of our junction) and the very quiet Joan Royd Lane (no pavement) leads to another signposted path, which starts between fences a little further west than the right of way line....

It's then a lovely walk across fields and tracks to Hepworth with plenty more good views and a village shop in Scholes if you need refreshments. It's then a climb almost all along footpaths up to the ridge, still with plenty of great views across the valley. The views are still good, as you are high up on a bit of a ridge, but it's hard underfoot and felt like it went on for ever....

My wife & I proposed this slightly amended SkePen 2 over SkePen 1, primarily to make it safe to walk out of Denby Dale via paths (see photo 15) and back roads, rather than an unpavemented main road. We've also suggested 2 further amendments that don't add to the distance walked: to enter Denby Dale via the pretty Wither Woods and to enter Penistone town centre for amenities....
