Description
Holmfirth to Huddersfield, includes steep sections, stiles, steps, cobbles and uneven ground; it is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with several medical conditions.
From Holmfirth Bus station, cross the footbridge over the River Holme and go down the ginnel between the Old Bridge Hotel and the Picturedrome:
Climb the cobbled slope up to Huddersfield Road. Cross to the right and climb Cooper Lane to the T junction at the top. Turn right onto Holt Lane which degenerates to a track after a few hundred metres.
The path swings left and meets a stone wall; turn right here and descend the marked path to the point where paths meet; go left here and down to and cross the stream:
Follow the path up the slope and along the side of the field, keeping houses to the right until reaching Leas Avenue. This involves two or three stiles. At Leas Avenue, go straight on until reaching Broomy Lea Lane. Turn right here and right again onto Towngate in Netherthong
In Netherthong, follow Towngate onto Church Street and School Street. Pass the Clothiers Arms and the school on the left, then go immediately left down the cobbled footpath which ends in a flight of steps onto Dean Brook Road:
Cross Dean Brook Road and Dean Brook and follow Deanhouse up to the Cricketers Arms and continue along past the Cider Press and restaurant.
Go through the gate to the right of the Cider Press and keep right up the hill around the orchard:
Follow the path up over the hill, cross the stile and keep Right, descending across the fields, crossing four more stiles and a farm drive to Oldfield Road. Cross Right over Oldfield Road to continue the path between houses then over two more fields to Long Lane. Cross Long Lane and go Left to the next stile. Follow the path across the field and out onto Stony Lane
Go Right, Left, Right on Roundway, leading onto Jaggar Lane and into Honley.
In Honley, pass Honley Junior School and go Right across the park. Exit onto Westgate and go Right past the shops and cafes to Church Street.
Turn Left onto Church Street then, just before the church, turn Right onto St Marys Road. Follow this round the church and then take the footpath indicated on the Right. This path is mostly cobbled and leads down towards the river. When the path meets a broader track go Left towards Magdale. Follow this track over Mag Brook and out to the road, Magdale. Go Right on Magdale, cross the River Holme and come out onto Huddersfield Road (A616).
Cross Huddersfield Road and go left up Hanging Stone Road. After about 50 metres, turn Right up the footpath (signed Upper Park Wood) and go under the railway bridge, for which you might want a torch.
Go Left on leaving the railway bridge up the rough path between walls. Climb the stile and continue slightly Left when the walls stop, climb the stile by the tree and head for the pedestrian gate to the Right of the farm buildings. Once through the gate go left and come out onto Park Lane.
About 200 metres up Park Lane, follow the signed footpath Left through the stile to Stirley Community Farm, skirt the lower side of the farm buildings, pass the next stile and follow the track to Ladyhouse Lane.
Turn Right on Ladyhouse Lane, then Left onto Hall Bower. Follow Hall Bower round to the made-up footpath signed to Newsome:
Follow this path to Newsome Road, cross onto St Johns Road and then Right onto Towngate. Follow Towngate onto Ruth Street and Ing Lane, keeping left on Ing Lane until it meets Dawson Road. Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
