Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hoddesdon’s Slow Ways.

I actually walked from Cuffley station to Broxbourne station extending the walk by 4km, It's difficult to get to Newgate Street by public transport. Whilst on the subject of difficulties, this is a moderate walk, in winter at least. Many trees have fallen across the path, some have been cut through, some you can walk around, but one you have to climb through. This walk is worth the effort....

From Epping station there's a path around the car park to suburban streets then onto the common. The highest point at Harold's Park Farm has great views, but there are many along this route. A small path behind some containers leads once again to a mix of roads, farm paths and tracks to the Lea Valley wetlands with good paths and tow paths. This is a very varied walk, great hill top views on good farm tracks, to wet wooded valley bottoms....

Many of the paths are blocked by; floods, trees, earthworks, overgrowth, ploughing. But it is essentially a good walk. I have created Hodepp Three to over come these problems....
Strider
Walked this route before Slow Ways was launched. Can be offputtingly wet at times but mostly a pleasantt canal heavy walk....

Excellent route alongside River Stort. It can become a bit muddy from the last lock, just before the end. It is possible to cycle it, although there are one or two stiles to lift your bike over...

Should this be the case it is easy to continue up Lampits to its junction with Charlton Way at a roundabout....

Overall a really lovely walk; some great woodland areas, and it was extremely quiet given the nice dry weather and proximity to London. For those not local, get yourself to Broxbourne (on the Cambridge - Liverpool Street rail line) first; there's a lovely walk along the canal to the Hoddesdon Clock Tower to start the walk (25-30 mins). - there's a couple of turnings on the route which are not signposted clearly + there's not a distinct path to follow, and required us to figure out where to go using some GPS....
Jamie Gibson
Not much to add to the other reviews, it was enjoyable, varied and fairly easy to navigate. Do watch out for all the new housing being built and whether it affects the route though....
Dan Barron
Easy going and mostly along the river away from any roads. A good one to recommend with easy access to north-east London....
Dan Barron
Some pavement walking through quaint Little Amwell, with petanque in progress on the village green opposite The Goat. Some narrow paths, a little mud, rough grass, cycle barriers and non-wheel friendly kissing gates make this walk unsuitable for wheels....
Strider
From Cheshunt a short 1km walk along pavements to the waterside. Then canal tow paths or riverside paths all the way to Hoddesdon, lakes, wild life, and sculls on the water makes this a pleasant walk....
Strider
Not a particularly complicated Slow Ways as it follows the Lea River Towpath and the New River footpath, but one where more is gained by keeping it simple. Flat and well surfaced throughout it makes for easy walking even after a lot of rain. The path goes through both woodlands and very posh neighbourhoods with lots of bird life, gardens, hanging willow trees, and even a few muntjac deet....

This is an attractive varied walk between the towns of Hertford and Hoddesdon which would work well in either direction. Takes quiet streets from Hertford East station then uses the A414 underpass to get into open country. Some waymarking (to A414 underpass) and surfacing could be improved around stiles (London Road and Hailey Farm)....
Tim Hagyard
Our weekly walk to Hoddesdon Market. Flat, easy, quick, lots to see. Can get muddy in parts in winter....
Ruth
It is beautiful, pretty direct route and the canal has a lovely calmness, it was lovely to walk this route....

Derick Rethans added Newhod three, a new walk from Newgate Street to Hoddesdon
Walk this routeI would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for a really annoying 1km section between the start and where the woods start. After crossing White Stubbs Lane, the route follows A local nature trail which is well sign posted. When nearing the A10 the views turn from woods into open views, and after crossing underneath the A10 through a tunnel the field is open....

The path along the New River can be narrow and uneven in places, and there is a narrow kissing gate access point (photo 3)....

Good direct easy to follow route connecting Cheshunt, Broxbourne and Hoddesden. The route follows the Lee River Navigation and the New River on mostly good towpath with some soft grassy verge. There are some splendid houses lining the New River on the approach to Hoddesden, I thoroughly enjoyed imagining how large the Victorian/Edwardian families who lived here would have been....

Instead continue on down Conduit Lane and there are traffic lights to cross the same road and then turn right to return to the route. There are plenty of places to get food and drink in Hoddesdon as the route starts at the end of the High Street but after that there is nothing until Roydon where I assume there is a shop or a pub although I didn't actully see one....

Walk this routeThis is a very pleasant walk along the towpath of the River Lea and then the footpath alongside the New River (not a natural river, but built to supply London's drinking water)....
