Help connect Newgate Street

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Newgate Street’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route

Overall a really lovely walk; some great woodland areas, and it was extremely quiet given the nice dry weather and proximity to London. For those not local, get yourself to Broxbourne (on the Cambridge - Liverpool Street rail line) first; there's a lovely walk along the canal to the Hoddesdon Clock Tower to start the walk (25-30 mins). - there's a couple of turnings on the route which are not signposted clearly + there's not a distinct path to follow, and required us to figure out where to go using some GPS....

Walk this route

I did one very long way from Hatfield to Newgate Street to Potters Bar, as Newgate Street is hard to get to....

Walk this route

Most of this route is on quiet tarmac or very wide byways/bridleways that are quite active from horses, motorbikes, walkers and mountain bikers....

But fortified by a good lunch from the cafe next to the Pub I walked along a residential road that morphed into a farm track alongside open fields. There a short section walking on a quiet road before turning onto a wooded path, Hornbeam Lane. The path turns into a track, and past a stud farm, into a paved road....

Walk this route

A path alongside the grave yard takes you to a hedge corridor past a sports centre and diagonally over a busy road up some steps into the countryside. a narrow path with a narrow bridge takes you to steps over the rail line. Not for wheels, narrow, steep in parts, narrow bridges and steps....

Andrew's Lane starts as a residential road then becomes a path before ducking under a subway and becoming a rural road. On reaching a road junction a footpath takes you through overgrown grassland, thistles, nettles, and grass chin high (150cm), the ground is uneven and hard to see under the grass, the signposts help. Across fields with horses then a narrow footpath to a road which leads to Darnicle Hill, yet another road without provision for pedestrians, it is wider than the previous two roads but the traffic is faster....

Walk this route

The road leading out of the village has sporadic verges but there is a path parallel to the road in the woods on the East side for part of the way. Leaving Northaw is down Judges Hill, a busy road with a narrow pavement but it is a short section before getting back into the woods along a narrow rooty path to open fields with cattle....

Walk this route

I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for a really annoying 1km section between the start and where the woods start. After crossing White Stubbs Lane, the route follows A local nature trail which is well sign posted. When nearing the A10 the views turn from woods into open views, and after crossing underneath the A10 through a tunnel the field is open....

Walk this route

It is mostly a delightful route, except for the half a mile along Carbone Hill to the finish at Newgate Street. After a steep descent the route briefly goes through the delightful "Home Wood" before an annoying section along the fairly busy Carbone Hill into Newgate Street....

Walk this route

Just north of Home Farm the track is not well maintained, and when I walked it there was a puddle the whole width of the track, which it was impossible to pass without getting my feet wet....

Walk this route

Lovely rural route but spoilt by the first mile or so out of Hatfield which is alongside a really noisy dual carriageway. I'm guessing there's no other choice as there is no free access through the Hatfield Estate?...
